Unreal. I think I watched the first black president of the United States on TV tonight.
(NOTE: This doesn't have to be a political thread! I'm just commenting on the dude's charisma.)

Good to hear. I forgot to watch him tonight, I'm watching the ketchup lady now...
WOW! I listened to it via radio and all I can say is that man is well spoken and intelligent. Great keynote speaker!
Woohoo! I've not watched/heard the speech, but everything I've read about Obama has been laudatory.
Plus, dude has a sense of humor...will joke about Obama vs. Osama. Right on!
I give up

That's a Real Player link. It's about a 20 minute speech.
The kid's all right, as they say.
Senior Lecturer at the University of Chicago in constitutional law... also was president of the Harvard Law Review. The man has an amazing pedigree and alot of sensible brains in his head.
"...a skinny kid with a funny name..." http://tetongravity.com/ubb/icons/icon14.gif
Charismatic speech indeed, though it was full of a lot of the usual rhetoric... (What political speech isn't these days, I guess.)
I agree, awesome speech. Very refreshing tone from a politician.
He was good - but how is one considered "black" if his mother was white?
Ben, please try to spread your ignorance elsewhere. Thanks.Quote:

I was extremely impressed. Someone of humble beginnings who has made the most out of his life and the tremendous potential he was blessed with. Very inspiring delivery and subtle, yet pointed, rhetoric addressing issues of opportunity and equality. I look forward to watching his record in the Senate.
I didn't see any of the convention, but the 'highlight' I keep seeing is that homely redheaded girl talking about Cheney using a bad word.
Obama certainly looks polished, from what I've seen.
For what its worth, I think that becoming President from the Senate is going to become more difficult with every election. Your voting record is easily distorted by the opposition. And as a junior Senator from Illinois, he will disappear from the spotlight for the next 6 -12 years.
Does anyone remember Rep. Harold Ford, Jr.? He was the keynote speaker at the last Democratic convention. A well spoken and intelligent African-American who was supposed to be the future of the party.
Did anyone catch Clinton's speech? Love him or hate him, that man is the real political deal. Even with all the baggage, he would pimp slap the living daylights out of President Bush if he was running in this election.
I would like to see a Presidential debate with '82-'83 Reagan and current Clinton. Two operators at their peak. Man that would be something.
good try ben. your ignorance is shining through though, you may wanna do something about it.Quote:

I was referring to the general ignorance of the America people, not myself. It makes me sick to see some of the things that people think about our leadership and our foreign policy. I heard the speach, I liked the guy, and I would prolly vote for him, but most Americans wouldn't. Maybe I'm not most Americans.Quote:

What makes you say that? I'll grant you there are racists who would never vote for a black candidate, but do you think this is the majority of Americans? I sure hope not.Quote:

americans are only as dumb as you think they are.
ted bundy was a serial killer, and ted kennedy is a senator. funny, they have the same first name, but the people of massachusets don't really seem to mind.
now, i'd agree that obama has a lot on his plate with regards to people's preconceived notions, but give people some fucking credit.
if my father was a sheep hearder in africa, i could have been a contender too.
the guy is good, not a bad bone in his body. intelligent x 10
Cosmic,
Harold Ford Jr. is a rising star too. Wish more democrats said things like this:
"I’m not a Democrat who thinks rich people have too much,” he says. . . “I don’t think enough people have the chance to get rich.”
Mr. G --
Unfortunately, in that regard Ford is just like Kerry, Clinton, and most of the democratic party. Neo-liberal corporate catering is bipartisan I'm afraid...
Clinton was great the other night, didn't see this fella y'all are talking about, but I will say that it's funny that every time an African-American gives a speech people describe him as a "Well-spoken black man." Like any politician isn't well spoken regardless of race.
Just thought of a politician that isn't well spoken: our current president.
I just think the the Democratic party is just too quick to jump all over the "next best thing." Let these young turks get some seasoning before annointing them. Obama is still a state senator fer chrissakes.Quote:

I have to be embarrassed at my own post - "an intelligent and well-spoken African American." Chris Rock did a good bit on Colin Powell where everyone is so impressed with his intellignce. Rock's punch line was "What did you think he was going to sound like - let's be all dropping bombs and shit."
Edit - homerjay beat me to it.
Good example. And then there's Tom "Mumbles" Menino, mayor of Boston. Totally unintelligible at times.Quote:

I guarentee you no one ever heard George Bush and thought: "He's so well spoken"Quote:

And yes, Chris Rock was on point about this issue. Too bad he's lost his fastball...
Edit: Homerjay edited his post, before I hit quote...
