i've just been using spd's and they're starting to annoy me. they're for a road bike, but i'm not out road racing and ride a lot of busy roads. i can get any of these for a reasonable price...

The Egg Beaters are a nice choice b/c you can then use a mountain shoe which will give you better all around traction when walking.
Performance had a sale on them a month ago, something like $65 a pair. If and when you sell the bike, keep the pedals.
My vote would be for the time atacs, they are a reliable and durable pedal that can use either a mtn bike or road shoe. They have a bit more surface area than the egg beaters so they are a bit more comfy when you are not clipped in properly or when you don't have you shoes with you.
There is a reason that these were used by pretty much every cyclo cross rider for about 10 years until the lighter, better mud shedding eggbeaters showed up. Since it sounds like weight and mud-shedding abilities are not on your priority list I say atacs.
Oh yeah, the eggbeaters had durability issues for quite a while although that may have been fixed by now.
If you're not a racer, no point in getting Looks. Cleats you can't walk in really suck. I always laugh when I see guys tottering around on their heels like they've got two wooden legs.
Do you have the 1-sided road SPDs? The 2-sided mountain ones are a lot easier to get into and out of. I use the cheap Nashbar (Wellgo) versions and they work great for road and mountain.
I know a couple people that swear by Bebops, but I haven't tried them myself.
Nope, Looks are the best platform, but they are a pain in the ass to walk in. But you have a bicycle, so stop walking and ride.
Also, pretty good weapons on your feet when the fat guy in the SUV actually makes the mistake to get out of his shell to debate you.
If you are not going to race I would also stay from Looks. I race with the Look 357 Pedals, not the lightest but a great platform. But rarely walk around in them. The Looks cleats make walking difficult and wear quickly if you walk on them.
When I bike commuted I put SPDs on a road bike a used my SIDI MTB shoes, the shoes were pretty stiff and worked well with the pedals. So I would stay away from the LOOKS and try something similar to the SPD with a cleat you can walk around in. Alot people are going to Speedplays, but I have heard those cleats are a pain in the ass, hard to walk in and expensive to replace.
The speedplay frogs are another choice. Light, good float.
