hey hey
i was wondering if anybody knew about good, maybe even free places to camp in southern or even central california near a beach. I lost my apartment and my job and I have a couple of weeks to kill before I go back to school. so I figure- hit the beach, work on my surfing skills. you know, cause chicks only like guys with sweet skills...
thanks- I could use a few tips to brighten my day.

Hitting the beach sounds like a great plan.

I've camped in San Onofre and had neighbors that camped in Carpenteria every summer. Thing is those were at state parks in pay camp sites. The state has a web page that lists all state parks with info on each. California also has the Coastal Access Guide, a book that lists all state beaches and their facilities and a description. They might have a web page. Similar for city, county, National Forrest, National Park and Rec areas.
You might want to check out a book or surfline.com's travel pages and get an idea about the surf in a particular area.
I think it would be a mistake to stay in one or two areas for a couple of weeks. I think you ought to cover the coast and surf as many spots as possible . How much beach water experience have you got? And take pics. When you run out of California keep going.
As far as free technically legal camps go, I dont know of any. If you have a live aboard vehicle like a van then I guess you will have an easyish time figuring out where to park for the nite. This may be a useful option since you may find that beach campgrounds are filled up during the summer, booked in advance. An option for state campgrounds are the hike/bike spaces , these are less likely to be filled. And like $5 vs almost $20 (!) a nite for the regular camps. Youth hostels are about the same price per nite.

Why bother with Caif. That place is now an armpit. Head south , south of Ensenada on the baja. In Ensenada stop in at Hussongs say hello to the ghost of surfers past. Drink a beer have a shot . Then drive on south on the hyw. take a dirt road that looks like it goes toward the ocean. Find your own surf spot. Surf your brains out, eat fresh lobster and fish. Read a great book by the light of a camp fire. Barter with the locals for food and beer and the like. Take a ton of photos. Gather your trash. Pack up your car. Drive further south find a new place and repeat all the above.
