We're messing with Skagit rods out here on the east coast (saltwater) for throwing gnarly shooting heads with big bunker flies.

Fun to watch the running line peel out of the basket foreverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I googled "spey casting" the other night because I had no idea what it meant, other than big rods. What I learned is that it was developed by Scottish anglers on the Spey river in Scotland for long casts with minimal backcasting. There's a great video of some Scot guy rambling on about the technique, it's very entertaining simply because of the accent.

Basically a super powerful rollcast?

I'm new to spey, but even with my suckitude it's amazing how much more river you can cover, much easier, with the Spey rod.

now if I could just start thinking like the fish.

Two types of basic spey. Scandanavian vs. Classic
Scan..or "Skagit" uses a shorter heavier shooting head to generate more rod flex with less movement. That is the style I have adopted after learning the proper classic spey back in the day.....Reality is just get your fly in the water the easiest and best way you can and forget about the text book, but don't forget the traditions. photo of quiver from Steelhead camp last weekend. Everyone has there own style, find yours.....
