Leica 1200! Well, you asked what do I use....
For simpler data collection where you don't need centimetre accuracy, maybe one of these?

Both of these brands come highly recommended, but I've no experience outside of high end surveying equipment...
Depends entirely on needs and budget. Low budget, no need for crazy accuracy, get a cheap garmin unit and external antenna and use DNRGarmin to get your tracks/waypoints into shapefile format. This is what I use for personal work (forestry). I made a super ghetto attachment for my antenna to mount on a blaze orange ballcap and it works pretty good. Bigger budget and higher data quality requirements, or ease of use by non-GIS folks, I'd suggest a Trimble GeoXT or the newer, smaller trimble hand-held unit, or maybe an Ipaq with GPS card?
She has a GeoXT that is a few years old and had a OS issue she just sent it back to see if Trimble could fix it if not she needs to replace it. She lets the local conservation commission use it they are not the most techy people.
Need more info. GIS work typically calls for damn good accuracy. What field is he working in?Quote:

edit. I see you answered some of these questions. Using GeoXT with what software? What accuracy needed.
The Trimble Juno ST is the one I was thinking of. If it's being used under much forest canopy I would recommend against the GeoXT without an external antenna of some sort based on my experience, and I've heard the newer technology units (i.e. Juno) do better. Maybe if they can't fix her GeoXT they will sell her one at cost?
I have used the Garmin Vista HCX and the Garmin 60CsX.
The HCX gets better reception in thick timber, the 60CsX has better features and a better interface. We tested almost every Garmin model we had in the shop, and we discovered that the Vista HCX and the 60CsX are the best models that Garmin offers.
