Anyone else been watching Jeopardy lately? The current champ has now won 22 times for a total of over $700,000! His name is Ken Jennings and he's from Salt Lake City. I don't see him going out anytime soon, either. The guy's range of knowledge is incredible and he's fast.
Before this season if you won five times in a row you were done. They changed it so you keep going until you lose. It might be a while before this guy loses.
Yeah, that guy is kicking serious ass.
If he gets far enough, I bet he quits at a million. I wish he'd stop being a wuss and get the one day total record.
I have it on good authority that he goes past $1 million. Actually I know someone that was on the show (hasn't aired yet). Ken was still going and was past one million.
The LDS Church must really be licking their chops since he'll tithe his winnings!

I think the guy's quickness is the key. One night a category was accounting and he totally smoked a guy who was an economist.
he's on fire! i was actually able to get my friends to watch with me for the past couple weeks. damn, maybe ill hafta sign up and knock him off if he keeps going.

i was on the show in '99.. imo, most of the contestants know most of the answers, so if one contestant has much better buzzer timing he/she usually will win.. in '99 there were a pair of lights to either side of the answer board that light up signaling if it is ok to click the buzzer..... and the shows i was on were taped in july, then broadcast in september.. if the same pattern holds today then there should be plenty of people that know how far jennings extended his win streak.

A friend of mine was a five-time champion. I made it through the testing a few years back when they came to Seattle, but never got the call. Sometime I've got to go to LA and do the tryout again. I hear that's the best way to get picked. However, they don't exactly need more white males auditioning!
i tested in chicago, and got a call 2 months later, which is or was unusual i guess, as i know a guy who has passed the test 4 times and never got a call..... i think the mock game after the test helps or hurts your chances of getting a call, but after that it is just a lottery.. do you ever check out the the jeopardy forum? its been a very long time since i have been there, but many contestants post (or at least used to post there) lots of good info.. also, after i got the call i used a book to help me prep for the show, but i think it may also help prep for the test.. "secrets of the jeopardy champs" written by 2 former champs... i think the question categories have changed and expanded a bit since the book was written, but i still consider it valuable to any would be contestant.. i have a copy somewhere, and if you are interested i could mail it to you.Quote:

Wow, congrats on Jeopardy, up-and-down! I had a roomate in college that tried like crazy to get on Jeopardy. He passed the test a number of times but never got the call. I kinda thought it was because he wasn't the most "camera-friendly" guy in the world, heh. He had long nappy hair and a big craggy beard. Smart as hell though.

I did reasonably well on the mock game at the Jeopardy tryout. I answered several questions correctly, anyway.
The highlight of my trivia career so far was being on Who Wants to be a Millionaire with Regis Philbin. I've already discussed it here before, so I won't get into it. But, in short, I guessed wrong at $32,000 and left with only $1,000.

i will have to search for it.... for jeopardy, i think in the mock game it isnt so much if you get the questions right as much as it is that they want to see if you can think on your feet and not be shy, nervous or embarresed in front of an audience. they want the show to keep moving and avoid the "deer caught in the headlights" look the some people might get on camera.
A guy I knew in college (he TA'ed one of my classes) won the College Jeopardy thing his senior year. I can't remember his real name, because no one ever called him that. Instead he was known as RIF (Random Information Frosh). Needless to say, he was pretty good with trivia. He also kept the nickname all through college.

I head that the taxes on gameshow winnings are unreal in the US - something to the tune of 50% Is that true?

I'm not saying that $1.2MM isn't a great pay day for the guy, but 50% of winnings is a bit steep. Same with loto winnings in the US....Quote:

I always assumed that given the US' comparatively low taxes (to Canada) that winnings of that sort would be taxed minimally, or not at all..... That is all.
