Unchecked bull trout aggression

Thought I'd post up a few (somewhat blurry) pics from early July, shot below the Oldman dam down by Pincher Creek, AB.

I was getting rainbows and cutthroats on egg-sucking leeches, and was bringing in a 13" fish when this bull trout came out of the depths and grabbed the bow width-wise, and hung on for a good 10 min. It finally let go when he got close enough for a fishing buddy to grab the tail. Once it let go, it took one more swipe at the bow, then shot back to the deep.

Not sure how big it was, but that is a 13" fish in its jaws. Probably not the first time that bull took on a hooked trout.

Makes note: if fishing by the Oldman dam tie up some hugemotherfuckingstreamers and bring a full sink line.

As the day wore on and so did the temps, I started to call it a day when, suddenly, red hooks up on a lil brown. I look over to see him bendo when he starts shouting, “ It’s eating him! Something’s eating him!!!!!” I see a LARGE fish swirl deep below, and tell him to reel! He kept saying”, But he’s not hooked!!! He’s eating him!”

He was now MAJOR Bend-O, and I grabbed the net. The fish was thrashing and fighting for it’s life! He got the fish close in and we could see it was a monster brown! We were hooten and hollerin as we coached Red on this(His FIRST) brown trout. As the fish go close to a boulder near shore, I see his rod go slack, and I was SOOOOO Bummed Then, (This is where it gets good) we all were watching the fish as it sat next to the boulder in 2-3’ of water. I saw the fish look around and spot the baby trout,(still hooked and on red’s 4lb. Line. Instead of swiiming away after the initial fight, this hungry monster goes Discovery Channel on that poor fish. It swam right up to it, bit it midway up the body, then inhaled it! We were all watching this unfold right before our eyes! As soon as I saw those jaws clamp shut, I yell to Red to start reeling it in so I can net the hungry beast. He put sum pressure on it but was worried that it still wasn’t “hooked.” After a few moments of more fighting, Red muscled the thing within netting range, and I scooped it up! We were hi-fivin’ and hollerin! It was a great moment!
Harvey has the pics, so ya’ll will havta wait! Sorry! We marveled at the small dead brown inside this 4lb’s mouth! This fish was never actually hooked, he just was intent on eating Red’s baby!

Yeah, that was the most ridiculous part, after the bull held on long enough to be brought in close and grabbed (unsuccessfully) by the tail, and then let go, it went for another swipe. It's as if he knew full well we had to release him anyways.

Lesson: bring a BIG net.

Cool story. What is a bull trout exactly?

There's this photo that always makes round on the internet too. The big fish isn't actually a Northern Pike but some other species or sub-species that grow very large in the UK or Europe or something.

Or the two-bodied, single head pike. I think the head of one pike just lodged under the gill plate of the other. But it looks cool!

It reminds me of that time Obi-wan and Quigon-Jin were piloting a Gungun submersibile through the Naboo core, and got snagged by a sea monster.

European pike and Northern Pike are the same species btw. They are probably more alike than the pike north of the AK range and the yaktat pike.

A large salmon trout of several species is called bull trout. Is it right ?
known as sea trout also. Two-bodied and single head look terrible in that pic.

Bull trout are a char, in one of those pics you can see the white leading edge of the ventral fin, like you see on brook trout or dolly varden.
Otherwise they look a bit like browns, though without the spots.

Nice. Did your friend actually get ahold of the tail or just within range?

Yeah, the friend grabbed on, but for the previous 10 minutes that the fish was bending my rod into a semicircle it wasn't using energy compared to the moment he felt that grip.
