Just started getting into skinning here on the east coast last season on a pair of dynastar legend 8000 (79mm waist) with Naxos. Any opinions on what other ski might make a good AT ski for the right coast? I was actually pretty happy with the 8000's last season so might just stay on those one more season, but wanted to see what some other people were using around here.
90 underfoot seems to be the sweet spot for me.
I've had a few skis that were 100-115 and I just couldn't justify the extra bulk at times (lift served is a different story).
My big thing is not so much waist, but sidecut. I don't want a carvy ski for touring (min of 25m rad or so).
Bros + dynafits. At least that is what I'll be using this season. Matters how you ski and what you ski though. IMO in tight EC woods you want a very small turn radius, but on Mt. Washington you want a big turn radius. Mt. Washington won out since I had 11 days on it this season (+ 11 more chic choc days). Straight, stiff skis are your friend when conditions start to freeze up and get sketchy. Standing on an icy Central Gully with 14m radius, soft skis was way to sketchy for me.
Edit: To be exact I got medium stiffness 179's and I weigh a 135 pounds.
I tour on a pair of '08 Gotamas 190s with Dukes and a pair of '08 Scott Santiago Mission 183s with Dynafit Comforts. The Gots are a bit long and heavy for me in the backcountry (I'm 5'11 and weigh 160). The Missions have been a wonderful touring ski. Light, relatively stiff, well built, wider tip for float and they're easy to swing in the trees. I think they have a 89 waist. They're relatively inexpensive as well. I highly recommend them for EC touring.
Very happy with the k2 mt bakers I toured with all last season using freerides.
I think they're just shy of 90mm waist. Decent float, handle hard stuff and ice just fine and pretty light for the climb.
I liked using naxos with some tree noodles. 105 PR's worked well for me.

Pretty light setup, certainly not Dynafit (thats soon)....but all in all nice. I'd bet it would be a nice EC touring rig.
I've been running Havocs and Freerides for the past few seasons and like the setup a lot. Skinny by some standards, but more than good for EC touring - and can make good turns on variable shit snow we always encounter.

If you are looking for something a bit fatter i have some 179 8800's(06-07) with super low miles that I could set you up with on the cheap come october when I get home.
districts with freerides, gotamas with naxos, and wailer 105's with comforts. all pretty sick.
