i can't youtube at work, but it'd be sweet if that elephant would paint a picture of an elephant painting a picture. trippppyyy
That elephant's trunk is D.A.F.!
Big deal... show me one who can paint houses, then I might hire him...
I'm a human and I can kinda paint a human. Does that mean I win?
Pfft. My elephant could paint that, and she's only two-years-old.
1) The elephant paints better than me.
2) Not likely the Elephants creation. Probably beaten, starved, and "trained" how to draw that picture. Those places have terrible reputations for animal care.
3) There are people walking by, throughout the video, carrying other "paintings" by other Elephants. This reeks of locals exploiting Elephant art for profit and treating the animals like shit.
4) Still pretty amazing that an Elephant can be "taught" how to do something as unnatural as painting.
IMHO
That reminds me- Did anyone get a hunting tag for this year's elephant season?
I posted this on ST as well but there's a rhino at the Denver zoo that paints as well and cat paintings fetch quite a price tag these days. Here's the rhino's self portrait:

The great thing is he works for peanuts...
that is fucking super sick if he did it himself. the way he repainted faded lines was super cool, and the flowers looked so awesome. thinking about it, he has to be trained, but its still pretty effing cool. i hope he just painted it himself. why the fuck doesn't he have a huge canvas and brush though?
I still prefer the monkey cages where they play with themselves and fling poo. Much more entertaining than the high brow art elephants. But then I always did prefer Different Strokes to Masterpiece Theater.
I think it's someone's arm in an elephant trunk sock
I did some research and found an organization that sells elephant art and seems legit. Their directors are also on the board of the Met, etc.
Elephant Art Conservation Project
going to do a little more research before buying anything, but it seems pretty neat... want to make sure 100% it is cruelty free and in fact helps le elephants :)Quote:
Asian Elephants left on our planet through our work with domesticated elephants. The AEACP promotes and sells the work of elephant artists as a way to raise funds for and increase public awareness of the plight of Asian Elephants.
We strive to give as many elephants as we can, a happy, healthy, enriched existence. Money raised by the AEACP is used to provide the elephants with better food, improved shelter, and proper veterinary care. It is also used to fund the further education of mahouts (elephant caretakers) in the humane treatment of elephants. We do not tolerate any abuse of the elephants either while painting or in everyday interaction.
To be even more specific, we actually send 30% of each sale directly back to the elephant that created the painting being purchased. As it is hard to send money to an elephant exactly, the money goes to the elephant's mahout and/or to the camp or rescue center where the elephant resides. This money is given under the condition that it must be used to benefit the elephants in some way. In addition, we have in place proper-care contracts with each camp and maintain trusted liaisons at each location that oversee the proper distribution of funds.
Well, true that they paint, but it's really just painting over traced lines:
