I'll hopefully be getting a new pair of sticks this summer/fall while the getting is good..but I don't really know what to get. Right now all I have are race sticks and it really sucks to use those anywhere but in the race course or on groomed.
So I ask...What are all the ECers skiing on? What ski do you spend most of your days on?
Search G4 or V-Pro... I remember seeing lots of threads like this.
I loved my x-screams before I ripped an edge out, but I'm not a racerboy or anything, so I like a somewhat softer ski. I really enjoy the skicross skis too, they're awesome for EC stuff, with tight turning radii and a lively feel. I loved my shorty candides (165) for the woods too, but I'm just a gaper, what do I know :D
seth pistols everywhere! just keep em tuned and they do great on the hardpack. on the rare day its total blue ice, ill take out some volkl p30s or k2 axis xts.

A pair of now 3 year old 185 PR's with absolutley no camber. They can shimmy through soft stuff like my Spatulas, but are (slightly) better everywhere else. Beware though, I like these skis, but I can overpower them and I'm only 5'9'' 135 or so. They are not a big persons skis, especially when used in a region with lots of harder snow.

got my first pair of fatty twins last season, and don't understand why i didn't go this route much sooner... got a pair of nordica beasts from ebay. there's an appreciable difference in stability, speed and other good things without much of the supposed drawbacks. plus, it's fun to try and learn how to ski switch and to get some use out of my helmet when i try something stupid and land sideways or whatever. they're much shorter than i'm used to, but honestly that only came into play out west on the really wide open stuff at mach looney. for reference, i'm about 6'2" and 200 lbs, a taurus with wavy brown hair. plus, i enjoy long walks on the beach at sunset.
Something in the 78-83 mm waist range is perfect for a one-ski quiver. For me that's been the Dynastar 4x4 big for 3 seasons, and the Legend 8000 for next year.
Or get one ski with a 90+ waist for snow days, and another modified GS (skicross, 6star, whatever) for all those days when the snow sucks.
i'm definitely going for some karmas this season.
Demo! List of candidates is wide but I would suggest you to try pocket rocket, G4 and Rossi B3 because they are easy to demo (well, in EU... prolly also in US), very different and not far from the top of their class. Soft PR and stiff G4 stand at the extremities of the range (hey, it's unclear what you wanna do with these sticks), B3 stay in the middle. Although B3 are so easy to get (and thus not a very glamorous pick), I have found them simply striking. If you are fast, demo the longest you can get

for a full day on the hill the pistols suit my style much better than race boards.. sure, doing nothing but arcing perfect corn or groomed - the race boards are going to be fun. my style on the hill leans more in the seth pistol direction though. i havent skiied tankers, but the newer SPs torsionally are good, i havent found the speed limit yet on them. i did mention i bring out volkls occasionally as well. :p
Skis that should be on your demo list
Stand alone "one ski quivers"
1. G4/AX4- durable as hell, world cup GS ski on steroids type ski, not for the faint of heart or those who like a lot of float in a ski its just too heavy/skinny as said above a great quiver of one ski for the EC grab a pair
2. R:ex- something of a defanged G4 which doesn't mean that it isn't a great ski just damper and more easy then the G4. Lighter then the G4 this would be a great pick for someone who is either a lighter skier or wants to do more touring as you'll be able to skin laps around the G4
3. Bigstix 84- don't know how the newer carbon fibers ski but the old bigstix was damp and smooth not as good on the hardpack but if you like to ski the crusty leftovers in the trees as opposed to the blue ice groomers this could be a good pick
4. 1080 depending on what kind of skier you are this could be a good pick since one of the areas that the EC can compete with the west in is Park/Pipe, I'm not a jibber at all but this is a really fun versitile ski if you aren't too heavy and ski trees on the powder days and park/pipe on the hardpack day
I'm not EC but I do ski mostly deciduous trees with the occasional Sasa field (It's like Bamboo) thrown in.

Very very nice ski. And easy to turn. Amazing in the powder but that's a given.

Fischer Sceneo 500 (incredibly fast and great for big super g carves)
Fischer RC4 Slalom Race (slightly bent but still great for huge carves)
Fischer Airstyle (bc)
Old Rossignol Bandits (bumps)
Yes I did. But I guess I assumed everybody skis powder. I have never skiid EC. Is it so bad you have to have Race skis? Must snow once in a while.Quote:

we got lots of ice, the occasional snowstorm, a bunch of hardpack, and the rare stashes of powder. You've got to be on point to get the powder stashes, not like those western layabouts :D . We try to poach as much tight bush as possible, as well ;)Quote:

Yup, I've skiied bush so tight that I've been picking it out of my teeth for days afterwards. Thats what its really all about.:D

how you like those airstyles? are they the ones w/ the white camo? dims always looked pretty decent and w/ a solid fischer construction, i figured they'd be good. so?Quote:

The Airstyles are really light weight, which makes them a great backcountry ski. I first skied them as a demo two years ago in the bumps and fell in love with them. This year, I grabbed them (the same demos I skied two years ago - see pic) and mounted a pair of Freerides to them. It's a great touring setup but I found that they don't hold an edge very well. And for skiing the steeps of Mt. Washington, it helps to have a good edge. But fortunately, the snow was pretty soft when I went up there this year, so it wasn't too much of a problem.Quote:

Overall, though, Fischer makes some kick ass boards. Those Race SCs revolutionized the way I ski and the Sceneos carve just as well but go so much faster. But I'm a little biased towards Fischer, as you could probably tell.
