dog handlers.
so I'm planning of getting a dog in this fall and spending the winter getting it ready for the CARDA spring course. Their are some great dog handlers at work who I am learning a lot from but I'm looking for a good training book. has anybody read Patti Burnett's book Avalanche/Hasty Search?
http://www.amazon.com/Avalanche-Hast...579319&sr=8-12
is it a worthwhile resource? any other reads you would recomend?

Yes, Patti's book is a good begining resourse. Patti really is the lady that knows the rescue dog business here in Colorado.
You can also check on www.avalanche.org for information on rescue dogs.
Cheers,
Halsted
PS The cover photo of Patti's book is my photo.

i was digging that photo.
i'm in Golden, I work with Kyle Hale at KHMR so I have a wicked mentor there. I was really just looking for a good read for over the summer to get me in the right head space for getting my pup come fall.

Ahhh, Wiser and Kyle - I just did my OARTM with them. Surely Kyle has some ideas for a good read?
Seeing Wiser at work made me think about getting into the CARDA loop too. He indicated on a buried pack that we missed with spot probing, and even when we probed the area that he showed - we still missed it!

you better talk to Kyle, because CARDA doesn't want you to start "training" your dog before the spring course. I would recommend the Monks of New Skete's book the Art of Raising a Puppy. Sure, read all you can, just don't use any of it right away. Let your puppy enjoy puppiness- everything must be fun and fun only! If you pm me I can send you some info by email regarding new handlers.
