My ankle done blowed up
The setup:
Sunday, Feb 24, 2008 @ Snowbird: Winter t-storm dumping graupel so hard it flowed like water down steeps. Vertigo from snow devils on the open slopes, so I stuck to the trees; no viz otherwise.
The terrain:
Monday, Feb 25, 2008 @ Solitude: Stuck to Summit, dropping skiers right from ridgeline. Face shots on fresh tracks every turn of every run.
The injury:
Unfortunately, I smeared a tree; boot hit just behind the "6th toe". Bad decision making re: my line on a crux. Blew up my ankle. Pics & xrays as below. Note the crushed tibia in the xray.
The epilog:
Climbing up the face I ragdolled down to retrieve my ski was brutal. At least the ski was wedged in at the tree trunk. No powder tails, so I might have lost it otherwise. I only had one more day before my scheduled return home, so thankfully I didn't lose out on too much skiing. On returning to Canada, I finally saw a doctor. Since I'll be gunning steeps at Whistler in early April with a bunch there called Extremely Canadian, so I'll be going balls out on the physio until then.
The lesson:
Scrub speed by turning BELOW a tree. Steeeeeeep & deeeeeeeep can mean more drift thru a turn than might be expected.
