I'm thinking about buying a pair for my wife's birthday. She's skated before, but hasn't for a couple years and her current skates are probably ten years old.
Anyone got any opinions on what brands and models are good? I've never done it, so have no idea at all what to look for.

In-lining has kinda gone by the wayside now that current "fad" sports like yoga, pilates, etc. are hot. But K-2 has always put out quality skates.
BTW, look at getting yourself a pair - best dry land ski training out there come fall. Exactly the same movements and all the same burns. Just find yourself a good long, mellow hill to skin (I mean skate) up and enjoy the ride down arcing big, phat turns. Seattle should be full of fun spots to hit up - neighborhoods usually work the best. You can even take your poles if you're a real hardcore, extemo dude. I am gonna get phunk, poho and str8 out this coming fall. :D
A nice pair of K2s or Salomons should be good. Make sure the bearings are at least ABEC3 standard (and preferably ABEC5). If you're using them for recreational skating purposes go for a decently sized wheel.
Bombing hills on skates is the shit. Me and a crew always used to head out at night into the city and dodge cars. Crazy stuff...

There's no doubt about it, skating can be terribly gay if it's not done properly. Dressing in spandex, attending roller discos, wearing legwarmers and anything that gives cameltoe are all out. Using poles looks a bit affected too unless you're slogging up a mountain. Too much protective gear will also make you look like a plum if you never exceed 3mph.

Most new skates come with ABEC 5 bearings....You also might try ROllerblade skates...they are easy to find and easy to find replacement parts for them...don't make fun of me...i don't skate my shop just sells them so i have to know a little bit about em!
