Eating Crow's Feet 2-2-08

Every morning I pull out of my garage, the first thing I see is The Crow's Feet, a 3,600ft avy path that you can see from all over the valley. Everybody knows what it is, and I'm sure everyone driving up LCC has seen it and wondered..................

I tried to ski it with Gramps a couple weeks ago. But we couldn't find the entrance to the top with the storm and route finding. Today we chose to just skin right up it instead of coming up and crossing multiple canyons to get to it.

Found a trail pretty early on.

Ryan, excited about the 4,800ft below him, and the idea of first turns on his big fat skis. He went a couple of months without a refrigerator, but bought a new touring set up. Atleast his priorities are spot on.

A ski cut on the rollover sluffed off the top 6", but that ran slowly down the line. No deep instabilites, just hero fluff.

Crow's Foot tasted really good today. Nice to finally get that bird off my shoulder. And I swear that I heard crow's cawing when we were skinning up.

You're absolutely right, I've eyeballed those lines and wondered about skiing them countless times. I'm sure I'd be well off the back, but I'd love the chance to join (talk about a Freudian slip, I typed jong the first time instead of join) the next Crow's Feet tour.

Quick Tech Talk question for your buddy: I've got dynafit bindings waiting for some skis. Definitely likely the DPS for the lightweight and reverse camber/sidecut, which I ski on now (Spatulas). Question is twofold: ski length, and thoughts on the 120 vs. the 138. I'm thinking the 120 in a 178 cm length would be great as it's more maneuverable and versatile, while still plenty of ski for flotation.

Not sure. Ryan was on the 192cm's. They are VERY light, considering.

He gave them to me to ski monday. Might be a good ski to add to the quiver. Unless PM Gear starts making some stuff like that. Hint, hint.

That line stares a million people in the face. Was there a cornice on top? Seems like the south wind howls over that ridge.

No cornice, nor any significant wind slabs. Just a 6" soft slab at the top, easily removed.

Was a MF or windcrust? about 3ft down, with some faceting below it. But only at the top 500ft.

looks like a pretty amazing day. if it were me, i'd find it really satisfying to bag a line that had turned me around on a prior day...as well as to get one that i stare at so often.

is it me, or do those skis look really short (or is your buddy very tall)?

those actually look more like 138s than 120s. (i have a 120 + dynafit setup which is insanely light.) i believe the 120s are wider at the very tip compared to the 138s. either way (120 or 138), the width of those skis and (lack of) weight of the ski+binding combo makes for an amazing tool for touring in pow.

I'm not a techy. They are 192cm's with (I think) 138 waist or something like that.
