...convince the wife to let me buy a nice new fly rod when I have three perfectly good ones already? I do have three nice rods, but they are lower-to-mid price/quality range. I'd really like to get a nice rod.

I already know the answer... she'll say "sell some skis for what ever money you want to spend on a rod."

Just buy it, lean it up in the corner. If she doesn't notice it within the 24 hour rule it's your's free and clear. Then if she notices it, "oh I've had that forever".
