I am asking the community to assist with recommendations for a decent cornice cutting setup for the Wasatch. What size of rope? (diameter) How long? spacing of the knots? any additional cutting spacers washers involved and where is their placement. Hand hold knots I assume are a loop on each side. Pics if you have them.

My cornice saw is a 50 ft. section of 5mm perlon (climbing cordage) with overhand knots tied into it about every 1.5 ft. On the ends I have hand loops tied through small pieces of stiff tubing for grabbing onto.
I have used my cornice saw for lowering an injured skier in a rescue situation before. It never hurts to have a rope in the backcountry!

For the more linear (small or big) cornices, you can make a couple of slots in the cornice. This can be done with a ski, or as I prefer, a self arrest grip on the end of a variable length ski pole. Drop the wire through the slots and try to get the wire as low on the cornice as possible. Sometimes a quick yank of the tool will help set the cable into the cornice. Once you have cut the first section of cornice, it becomes much easier to then work in either direction, taking big portions of the cornice without having to cut the slots first. This is true if you are using the p-cord method as well.

i'd use whatever these guys are using. it seems pretty effective.
for the castle peak cornice we used a 5mm rope with knots tied into it. and it's about 60 ft long
