Anyone working in the financial sector

I´m planning on going into this sector hopefully this spring, early summer either as an analyst at an IB or VC firm or doing financial analysis at a company whose function is something else and I wanted to talk to someone who´s done it or is doing it now and get some feedback through PMs or email or something. If anyone wouldn´t mind a little mentoring or advice regarding resume, cover letter, job search techinque or whatever I´d really appreciate it. I´m looking into San Francisco because that´s where I´d like to be but any general information or insight would be great.

I worked in the financial sector for 4 years - 3 in Boston for Putnam Investments and 1 year out here for Raymond James. Finally washed my hands of it and let my Series 7 expire but I would be happy to tell you the little bit I know.

I work in structured finance and have been around the street enough to provide some color. PM me if you want to chat.

Most investment banks have completed their interviewing for next year's class.

I can't speak for VC, PE or any other fruity investment firms.

The few Analyst positions available in banks have been filled already, at least at the bulge firms. You may be able to go after some of the smaller shops around the Bay...

Shoot me a PM and I can give you some more insight...btw, banking is 90% tech, 8% healthcare, and 2% energy in SF...

Next year's class as in starting in May? When did that end? I thought it took place through Jan/Feb, guess not. Would it be worth it to try and get one of the summer internships and go in that way? Or should I search in a different sector/ smaller firm. Are the summer programs paid?

I'm going in new. Here's another question. I've been investing/managing money on my own for about 5months now (not just a few k either, much more) and have learned a lot from first hand experience and from what i've read in books, news articles, learned on my own from following and analyzing trends, etc. but I have no idea how to incorporate this into a resume setting as its not an actual internship or job but something I've done on my own. Thoughts? I know its definitely something I'd bring up to talk about in an interview as relevant experience, but getting to the interview is the harder part.

Oh, and since I graduated in 06 (BS business and a BA in economics) am I going to be looked down upon in the by the finance guys for not going straight to work?

Where ever i work, they automatically consider it to be a "bulge bracket" if you know what I mean.

If your willing to work cheap, long hours and no vacation, then there will be a job for you. Dont be afraid to take any job that will get you in the front door. It is what you do afterwards that will determine your progress. And, its where ytou wnat to be iin 5 yrs that matters, not your first yr. salary.

And ,no one cares if you have a scwaab account either. Leave that baggage at the door.

Really? You're saying I should leave out stuff I've learned on my own that wasn't in a regulated "internship" setting? I'm not claiming to be an expert but I've learned things that I think are definitely relevant and would show some knowledge that I thought would make up for lacking internship experience. guess not.
