Lame: Aperture Doesn't Support 40D RAW Files

I don't know how I missed this before I picked up my 40D a couple weeks ago, but apparently Aperture doesn't support the RAW format from the 40D unless you upgrade to Leopard. I've been considering upgrading to Leopard anyway, but it's the principle... I'm a Mac devotee for sure, but that's about the most ridiculous scenario I can imagine put out from Apple. So here we've paid a couple hundred bucks for a "pro" application like Aperture. Of course, most of the photogs that use that program are going to be using the latest and greatest equipment, shortly after it comes out. And Apple wants us to pay another $130.00 to upgrade the operating system before it will support the "latest and greatest". Screw that. I've been considering checking out Lightroom for some time now...maybe that time is now. Boo to Apple.

You think that's a ridiculous scenario? Not compared to what I enjoyed, courtesy of Adobe.

When I bought a new camera body about a 1 1/2 ago I had to upgrade to PS CS3 just so I could get the latest version of the ACR plug in. Adobe chose not to release a CS2 compatible version of the plug in.

AND then I had to upgrade to OS10.4 because CS3 did not run on OS10.3.

Total cost to me: $450 Cnd.

Are you running 10.4? Because Lightroom also requires it. And note that Lightroom is not compatible with 10.5 and may not be for a while.

It's not just Apple that likes to sell new software. :rolleyes2

I see it as revenge for all those years I got Photoshop for free.

I have a perfectly fine G4 tower that I just wanted to hot rod a little with a USB 2 card and more Ram, but the kid at the Apple store told me to look on EBAY for both items. In other words, buy a new damn computer, fool. The computer and bottled water people are burying the Earth with their waste.

Aperture is a piece of fucking shit. It is hands down the worse photo program that I have ever used. Spend the money and get light-room.

The biggest issue with Aperture is that it doesnt support meta-data in the same format that Adobe products do.

No No No, Lightroom IS compatible with 10.5 if you read the info on Adobe's site they will tell you that there are a few minor bugs with that combo but it does work....

Also the print function issue with Lightroom and 10.5 is only when you use certain printers whose mfgs have not supplied the new upgraded software for there printers to work with 10.5.... I.E. epson.

Can't speak for Aperture, but I will second the recommendation for Lightroom. It's easy to use, effective, and is a great organizing tool.

Bring in the GIMP! Oh, it's mainly for Windows... and free... never mind.....

Yes, I've read the info on the website, did you? Lightroom is NOT in the column marked "compatible" it is in the column called "Requires Update." And the notes say that "future updates will address areas of Leopard compatability."

Some of the "minor bugs" (your phrase, not Adobe's) that have been documented include the fact that ICC printer/paper profiles won't properly load, (which is unrelated to the Epson print function issue). Not having access to those profiles is a huge deal for a fine art photographer who relies on a colour managed workflow to make prints. Or that importing images sometimes leaves a few random photos not transferred over, which a person may not realize until they have already overwritten the card with new images.

When Lightroom is compatible with OS10.5, Adobe will say so. Until then user beware.

Lightroom is the answer. Great piece of software that I'd hate to live without. Once you get used to developing your RAW files in it you'll never want to use anything else.

I have found that photoshops soft-proofing tends to work a lot better anyways. I.E. you can make direct color adjustments, without having to switch between modules.

Also ALWAYS check the image count on import in additon to make sure that the ignore images already in the library is turned off.

No doubt, but they do support all major manufacturer's RAW files via open-source plug-in downloads. It also does everything 99% of photogs need. You ever use it?

Hey Grizz,

I thought long and hard about Aperture before eventually going with LightRoom. The main reason that I chose LightRoom was because I knew that Adobe would do a better job of keeping up with new RAW formats than Apple. The other reason was that the Aperture interface annoyed me - and I'm usually a bigtime fan of Apple's interface.

I've used Lightroom now for 3 or 4 months and it is a pretty kick-ass program. There are some things that are not great of course and the interface can be little too "linear" when completing certain tasks but it does SO many things SO well that it's easy to forgive the shortcomings.

If you want to get together at my house or at work I can give you a LightRoom demo.

Thanks, Gunder, but I realize there is a fix for the print module issue. I was talking about the fact that even after the print module loads, the ICC printer/paper profiles you select are not always maintained when printing, making a colour managed workflow impossible. That's not a problem if your images will be handed off to EPP, like most of mine are, but it is a problem if you make prints to sell.

Of course the easy solution is to print from PS CS3 which is fully compatible, but that's an expensive option for Lightroom owners if they don't already own CS3.

Grizzle6, does your 40D has firmware version 1.0.4 or 1.0.3?

Just do it. DUMP IT! Get lightroom!

An update has just released by Apple for OS10.4 that among other things adds RAW support for your camera (and several other new models) to Aperture, iPhoto etc. :)

More good news. Lightroom 1.3 just released and gives compatibility with Leopard and is suppose to fix the issue with 40D firmware 1.0.4 and RAW.

Kudos to both Adobe and Apple for timely updates.
