For a variety of reasons but I'm fairly certain US resorts pay a pretty penny for various insurance products. Cuz we like to sue companies. In Yurp, suing the ski area is, I think, uncommon if not unheard of. Subtle may know more...
That alone changes the dynamic. And skiing is a national sport...

I just spazzed out on the JHMR prices.

But that's Holiday pricing @$309. Dailies average $235 after that except for the holiday weekend. And there are a variety of ways to bring down the daily rate a bit. My season pass w/ blackout dates was around $1700 in the spring. I ski maybe 5-6 days...
