$650k for a marginally buildable lot that's on the brink of sliding off a cliff. Some nutjob paid $450k for it in 2016, which is even crazier....

That's easy, just grill a portabello. When it's upside down, brush the gill side with olive oil and balsamic. Top with cheddar and let it melt, throw it on a bun. A million times better than that weird processed fake meat...Leave a comment:

Smashburgers are good too, but a whole different experience from a big juicy traditional burger. There's room in my heart for both, just like I can love apple pie and mixed berry pie👍 1☕ 1Leave a comment:

I agree with a grind that's 15 to 20% fat. If you happen to have a fancy butcher shop that will actually grind a piece of chuck for you, even better. Possibly heretical, but I will mix in diced onions and soy sauce to punch up the umami. You want to get a good crust on them, I would consider a cast...Leave a comment:

From my browser home page: "This date marks when HAL became fully operational, as stated in the film '2001: a Space Odyssey.' He was polite but his operation of the pod bay doors was inconsistent."😀 1Leave a comment:

Re: stainless, we have a stainless countertop with integrated sink, got it from a local metal fabricator that focused on building out restaurant kitchens. It was like 1/4 what we were quoted at a residential kitchen counter company. Cool thing about it is it's seamless - it's L-shaped with a wall at...Leave a comment:

But having a pension makes a big difference - guaranteed money every month, probably indexed to inflation, for the rest of you life. Not many in our generation are lucky (or foresighted) enough to have a pension. I'm just curious for the folks who are saying they would be fine with a much smaller nest...Leave a comment:

Yeah, I was using $2.5M as my number for awhile but that was pre-inflation and I think it's more in the $3.5M range now. With $2.5M, at the typical safe withdrawal rate of 4%, that would yield $100k/year. But you'd pay some taxes on it (depending on what mix of retirement accounts you have), so say...Leave a comment:

FYI, penalty-free withdrawals from IRAs start at age 59.5 according to Goog, that might ease the logistics you're describing?...👍 1Leave a comment:

Given that, as someone pointed out upthread, retirement could be several decades long, the move is not to put everything in low or low risk investments. More like 10% in a CD ladder for immediate needs, 10% in bonds or something else stodgy for the midterm, the remaining 80% out there in the marketplace...Leave a comment:

Why not? The only catch is they might ask you to prove that you're looking for work, which could get to be a hassle. For 100K though it seems worth it...😘 1Leave a comment:
