That traverse across tge top has caught more than a few people. I thought that was part of the hill now? Maybe closed for spring solar radiation?

It didn’t open all season due to the rotten snowpack and basal facet situation…

Also lack of gear. It will be telling to see how deep the burial was and whether or not there was trauma.
Would they really have You May Die signs for an inbound closed area? I thought those were typically reserved for gates leading to the BC (oft times with a beacon check). Either way we generally ski right past those knowing we may die.

I was there all weekend and the west bowl was closed with those signs everywhere. We saw more than a dozen tracks ducking ropes in that area from the summit chair, as well as entering in from the outer limits ridge line. People seem to has this weird notion that patrol wants to keep shit closed for no reason.

            Dumb. Ways. To. Die.

I hope the people who put in those tracks in are feeling guilty after the consequences for the people who followed their example.

Like 35-38ish. There's steeper lines to the north/northwest of the west bowl.

                        This.
The people that got caught are responsible for their own actions. The folks that skied it and didn't get caught are also responsible for their actions, but only theirs. They are in no way responsible for anyone that followed them.

I'm not going to argue for guilting people who got away with something. But someone decided to duck a rope where there were no tracks (maybe the same people who got caught just on an earlier lap). The last people to go decided to duck a rope that had tracks, which is an easier thing to trick yourself into. Apart from that the choices were identical, they just had different outcomes.

Ideally tracks wouldn't influence anyone's decision making. But ideally no other form of peer pressure would, either. And the argument itself is an attempt to create peer pressure to influence others, so obviously no one quite believes that.

Ultimately powdork is right that individuals are responsible for their own actions but it would be pretty naive to think that individuals make decisions in a vacuum.

I followed tracks when I was a young skier figuring out my way in the mountains.

I try to conceal my entry points to the cliff area adjacent to the boundary at our local hill. Local kids see me coming out of there and I know for a fact that they go looking for my tracks.
