23.5hr: 16”
cold blower

had the bring my fleet of shovels inside last night to dry off and wax, rimed up real good leaving them outside which made for less than ideal shovelingComment

Hey assholes, when driving in a whiteout there's no need for using your hazards. But how about turning on your fuckin headlights?!
*Not directed at anyone here, of course, but the amount of people on the roads right now that have no business driving a vehicle, probably ever, is mind boggling.“I really lack the words to compliment myself today.” - Alberto TombaComment

Question for the Schralpine or Squaw peeps that have been around the block. Working on a UA post for today.
When is the last time you remember a three day in a row closure? I can remember a couple of two day closures, but not more than that going back to the flood of 1997. Thoughts?Comment

82 of course. i don't recall how many days but more than 3 at Alpine. Not sure how long Squaw was closed then. Then there was storm early 90's started the day after xmas. I don't know how long the resorts were closed for that one but 80 was closed more than 3 days. I suspect the resorts were as well.
My plow guy did a full scrape of the pad in front of my garage instead of the quick job he normally does in these conditions, maybe because I came out and asked him if he wanted some coffee (he didn't). Now I feel like I should take advantage of the clean driveway and go someplace. But there's nowhere to go. The good/bad news is that there won't be a berm for a while because they don't seem to be plowing the road.
At the moment it's snowing harder than it has been before now. So far the we still have power but the parade of PUD trucks going by is making me nervous.Last edited by old goat; 03-03-2024, 02:20 PM.Comment

It gets better. On Friday they were on IG hyping the BC skiing conditions and soliciting new customers to come ski with them today (Sunday). So, not just what we were told here, but straight from the horse’s mouth. Of course they posted right before 395 closed, but come on, that was the most likely outcome at the time they posted.
Anyways yeah it’s been a minute … last time I was in Tahoe was for the St Patrick’s Day 2018 storm cycle that dropped 6 feet of snow between the 14th and 17th (the timing was dumb luck). I’ll try to make it back there with bike or skis in the next year or so …_______________________________________________"Strapping myself to a sitski built with 30lb of metal and fibreglass then trying to water ski in it sounds like a stupid idea to me.
I'll be there." ... Andy CampbellComment

December ‘21 maybe? I feel like OV had a three day but AM was doing like subway meadow.Question for the Schralpine or Squaw peeps that have been around the block. Working on a UA post for today.

got out for some laps in the hood. full blizzard conditions for sure. skiing really good with what felt like good stability. We gradually upped the ante and got into some steeper stuff by the last two laps. The tree wells are spooky to say the least. Sorry no ski shots

I'm still hoping 88 opens by Tuesday night (3/5). Here's this morning at 8 am @Pickett's Jct from social media. I know no one here works for CalTrans but are we still feeling confident they can open 88 from Pickett's to Kwood by Tuesday with all the attention on 80?
Not sure what my backup plans are rn if the road doesn't open since we have lodging and lift tickets there...

We tried just about everything short of skinning up 40 to get to SB. Caltrans at DLI wasn't into letting us through with a Serene Lakes driver license. He said the freeway was pure ice.
Ended up doing a quick walk/ski behind the house and then building a kicker with the big kid using the driveway for the run-in and the plow berm for the jump.
I cleared another two feet from behind my shop where it's less wind affected. I'm putting the total at about 6' total over here with the first couple of feet being pretty wet/heavy.
The schools already called for a snow day. Let's see what opens tomorrow. I figure it'll take a couple of days to get OV upper mountain open. Maybe tuesday? I'll be blown away if they have it ready for tomorrow. SB will probably mostly go. Decisions..... I'm ready for some laps. Its been a long weekend moving snow and day drinking.
It's been a while since the resorts and 80 have been closed for this long.Comment

I don’t know shit, but 88 is managed by a different Caltrans district than 80.I'm still hoping 88 opens by Tuesday night (3/5). Here's this morning at 8 am @Pickett's Jct from social media. Looking at the current forecast I’d be surprised if they can’t open Carson Pass by Tuesday.
