Travelguard paid us for unused heli hours due to weather when we went with Points North. (Although I suspect post pandemic travel insurers are getting stricter. They wouldn't let my wife use a 2020 voucher for travel insurance because of a pandemic canceled trip where she was reimbursed by the tour company and airline--so no cost to the insurer. They said she waited too long.)

Tough to clear the roads with stranded cars on them. That will delay opening 80 after the storm slows enough for safe travel.
When CPG canceled our days they didn't charge us.

My feel is that there needs to be a reasonable case for closure. If you cancel because you don't want to storm ski, that's on you. If NVDOT advises against travel or there are road closures and/or conditions where emergency personnel couldn't get access, it would seem prudent to close ops and reschedule (either refunding the money or applying it to a future date). As a business owner I wouldn't want the liability of pushing a questionable situation. Do we mostly agree, on this particular weekend, that if something were to happen that the operation could be found negligent? I think this storm is overhyped, but the data would probably be in favor of those that wanted to pull the plug.

Again, totally different from "I'm making a run to Benson hut" vs. you planned this trip with our org and we aren't allowing you to cancel under reasonably extreme weather conditions. Personal decision vs. Operating a business. The same balancing act that I've given PT shit about As a business you assume some liability no matter how good that release is.

The no refund thing isn’t of much concern to me actually, it’s what we’ve been told about the proprietor’s communication to the clients and, from what we can gather, encouraging them to come down during a time that all public officials are saying to shut everything down, without providing any reassuring explanations about contingency protocols and how they plan to manage not just avalanche hazards but more importantly EMS/evac, and more the mundane stuff like will they be able to help with vehicle retrieval at the end of the booking period, how they keep the yurt accessible and safe to enter/exit, etc.

Glad to see you back in here Alex. Not to get into it too much, but the yurt guys should have cancelled the trip. If something happened to any of their guest during a storm cycle like this, they would be stuck in a yurt for a few days before they could get evacuated. I do think offering a rebooking for next year would have been reasonable.

88 is closed from Ham's Station to Picketts Junction right now. That does not happen unless there is some series snow on the road. They do not even mention the Spur or Pass.

My meeting for tomorrow is not happening, so maybe I play. Watching what roads might be passable. Thank ya'll for the updates. 56" in Tahoma sounds like a real deal.

Nagano moguls gold medalist Jonny Moseley joins the Stifel Snow Show to break down a memorable weekend in Palisades Tahoe, his gold medal moment and the rapid growth of freestyle skiing, and what has made the current crop of Americans so good.

Next week Ligety will review this weekend's races at Aspen. The second run of the GS (just wrapped up) had another interesting finish.

I've got some old ones and some stragglers you're welcome to. Mix of polkadots, black, ski socks etc. Ski socks are good b/c they'll teach the other socks how to get after it.

As for teaching kiddos I've done curriculum review at the college level. The challenge is there's a hundred things we'd like to teach, but limited time to do it. Adding something means removing something else. For the K-12 crowd, I'd say get them a solid grounding in the traditional 3 R's. With that, they can learn anything else from tiktok/youtube. How to cook? How to run quickbooks? Must be thousands of videos. I found dozens for changing a specific part on my exact car model. So, maybe millions of how to cook videos then. I'm favor of plenty of elective classes, which may include cooking.

I also like concept based learning - master the concept, then move to the next concept. Trouble is that's more expensive and we don't pay teachers enough to get the people who can manage a class of kids each on a different page of the textbook.

Thank you for your perspective. The only teacher that changed my life was my high school autoshop teacher. I was blessed to be a part of his program. He is now retired (still a friend) as well as the program. IMO that was a very sad day.

The internet and the super computers in our pockets are strange. Who needs calculus any more? Heck, our devices even correct grammar. That said, ignoring and forgetting those things feels wrong, too. Life skills, though.... Our society isn't setup to make success easily accessible for a lot of people. I hope to impart a lot of knowledge on my children that I learned the hard way, while also teaching them that the normal metrics for measuring success do t mean much.

^^^ Good sounds for something tomorrow.

Has this thread migrated to a discussion about public primary education? Kewl. There are a million things we could change, or consider, so we should be able to create a hundred page plus thread on this topic. I think they still teach grammar in these schools. And you can easily use the internet to learn how to change a tire. Trade programs were excellent when they existed. A lot schools no longer have the arts, civics, or PE. Its too bad. Schools had way better funding in the 70s.

                  So........

What's happening up there? Looks like its still storming.

Been quite a nice day here in SC. A few bouts of rain, but plenty of time to go for a coastal ride. Really wish I was up at the cabin, going out very few hours to keep the path in good shape. Someone is renting this weekend, and no one has been up since President's Day. That is going to be fun dig out.

42” of snow on my deck in OV at 11a.
The wind is clearly making accurate storm totals hard to measure so I’m feeling like things are performing as forecast.
significantly colder today and the snow is quite light density. good right side up storm so far. Tomorrow should be insane ski conditions.

Still no snowflakes in San Francisco. Hell, it barely rained today but wet enough to cancel first little league games.

No snow here either, but rain began in earnest about an hour ago... If the 2k forecast holds, there will be some capped local peaks.

It’s coming down hard in TD right now. My wife was not happy with the drive over, but there’s power and hot showers here. Fingers crossed we have power back by the AM.

I’m skiing tomorrow. Don’t really care how I accomplish that. Fingers crossed for SB.

Palisade says they want to open 1030 tomorrow. Given the forecast I'm skeptical. The forecast is now showing snow until the end of the week.
