The visitor was just trying to get a view over the backside, triggered a cornice failure, took a 100' ride over a cliff to a hanging snowfield, triggered a 40'+ wide slab, 2-3'+ deep, and went another 200' over another 30-60' cliff band where they thankfully arrested on top of the debris, as they did not have a beacon or helmet on.

We bailed on the early Jan trip due to low snow. Figure out how to get the clan back together though so will be in the Village first weekend of March. Bummed to miss the mag parade last couple of weeks, but if anyone will be meeting at the fireplace let us know.

This was the second cornice event I've been part of at Targhee that probably should resulted in a fatality but didn't. In both instances, the large chunks of cornice that the guest ride over the edge seem to take most of the impact. Around 2014 we had a guest take a ride off the backside. We brought a range finder out after and estimated that the guest freefell for around 275' and only reinjured an old back injury! Crazy to think a random skier from Australia has gone bigger that Jamie Pierre!

It's good to be King.

Mother Nature pulled me from the rotation and benched me for the rest of the PNW mags visit.
I am crushed.

But the wine was sweet in the little time we had. I'm in tentative pre planning for a 24/25 Teton gathering. Hopefully my bros will come back soon.
