    Tahoe '25/'26 - A Thread Of Hope

The rules say it's time for a new Tahoe thread once we have new skiable snow and that has definitely happened. Several mags have already posted photos in the old thread, so we know skiing and riding has happened. Myself, I did some indoor skiing in The Netherlands a couple of weeks ago, and I am going to say that counts. It was definitely more fun than some of the patch skiing I have done in the month of October. Another unseasonably active storm is on the horizon and that does give some hope that we could have a better than okay season. Nonetheless, Mount Rose is expected to open just 20 days from now...the '25/'26 Tahoe season beckons.

What a fucked up state the world is right now. (I love writing at TGR because swearing is fun!) We have world leaders that for the most part have gone bat shit crazy. The billionaire class is enjoying life to the fullest, while the rest of us are looking at double digit inflation, wondering how a tri-tip burrito goes for $18.99. We wonder whether we will even be able to afford a burrito once our health insurance premiums double or triple, just months after our fire insurance was cancelled. We have stopped watching the news, as it's just too depressing to watch. Until ski season starts, we only have the great outdoors, music and whisky to keep us going until we are again sliding on the snow. We need some hope in this world.

I love skiing because it gives me hope and lets us forget about all of that other shit. For any non-work day, there's no question about what we are going to do - you just go skiing or riding. For those of us that are already reverse ski bums or otherwise fun-employed, we get to just get and go to the mountain each and every day to slide on the snow. Hopefully while we are out there skiing, someone else is working on erasing the copy of "Idiocracy" that is currently playing on endless repeat in our daily lives.

Cheers to a new season. I am looking forward to sliding on snow with some or many of you. Fuck yeah!

    WEATHER & TRANSPORT INFORMATION

TART Connect A system of on-demand rideshares that are free and fill in gaps between bus routes/schedules. That said, who are we kidding? For most of Tahoe, public transportation if a damn pipe dream, with the exception of South Lake Tahoe.

    TRAFFIC / ROAD CONDITIONS

Nevada DOT - Highway Controls Summary 511 or 877-687-6237 (877-NVROADS)
    nvroads.com

    I-80 Chains Bot on Mastodon

50 Chains bot on Twitter (Cancelled by a friggin idiot...no replacement that I can find)

CalTrans QuickMap - You'll need to find the Tahoe region and set options for chain controls, etc

    ACCIDENTS & INCIDENTS

California Highway Patrol - Traffic Incident Page (select area - Truckee, Sacramento, Bishop, etc.)

    APPS

California Road Report for iOS: a great resource for conditions, incidents, cameras, chains. CarPlay compatible. You do need to spend time learning the app before you need it. Documentation is minimal.

    WEBCAMS

    Magnifeye CalTrans & Resort cams

    WEATHER

NOAA Remote Data Your one stop shopping center for real time data across Tahoe

    WEATHER AND TRANSPORT INFORMATION

BA's Open Snow People in Tahoe seem to love this guy, some say he is a paid resort shill. Once he started charging money for his reports, I stopped paying attention.

WeatherWest Daniel Swain is "the man" when it comes to knowing California weather. Unfortunately, Swain is such a big deal that he only gets time to post to WeatherWest about once a month. That said, check out the comments section on each post as there are hundreds of weather geeks and wanna be weather geeks adding in their 2 cents on a daily basis.

Pivotal Weather This is one of many places to check out both current conditions and the weather models. You have to know what you're looking for...

      Recommended Food and Shop Zone

Couple of things here, I pretty much spend all of my time in Truckee and North Tahoe, so if you have ideas for SLT or other areas, PM me and I can add them here. Second thing...it is damn expensive in Tahoe, as in ridiculously expensive. We're talking $28 bucks for a burger and fries or $40 bucks for a pizza. So for foods, let's not talk about the expensive stuff. Where can us mere mortals get decent food without breaking the bank?

      Truckee

Golden Rotisserie: Located near the DMV and Dairy Queen. The owner, Sergio, started at Ti's then Bill's and now GR. Hours can be unpredictable. Taqueria slash rotisserie meats

Club Raleys: Made to order pizza and sandwiches, hot foods bar and deli plates along with a decent selection of beer and wine. Fuck, I really should not share this.

Buoy And Trap: Better than average seafood joint out near Full Belly Deli. It's not cheap but I have heard the lobster rolls are good. Many locals suggest going for happy hour. They are also a fish market.

      Kings Beach

La Mexicana - Meat market meets bakery meets taqueria

      The Burrito Window

      Bear Belly Brewing Co

      Tahoe City

Three Sheets Brewing: This is the old "Moes BBQ". The BBQ stuff is still there but without the crappy sides. But go for the beer. The Three Sheets Brewery located within is producing some fun local brews. I like their Kolsch and the Yacht Rock.

      Incline Village

Ti's Rotisserie - They're back, after a big grease fire last winter. Higher prices but still good. Still cash only?

      South Lake Tahoe

      ????

      Ski And Board Shops

Tahoe Sports Hub: On West River Street, where locals buy gear. Great selection and great staff. Excellent boot fitting.

The Backcountry: Located in Truckee near Tacos Jalisco...no more Mikey B anymore.

Start Haus: Now located just before the mouse hole on 89. It's easy access going toward Tahoe, but the it to get back to Truckee or 80 leaves me shaking my head at this location. This is the place to go for serious race level gear and tunes and race boot fitting. New location will eventually be off 89 just before the mouse hole...either a brilliant idea or a fucking traffic nightmare.

Olympic Boot Works In Olympic Valley...the place to go for boot fitting according to OV locals.

Best Fit Boots in Truckee in the old outlet mall next to Pico's (recommended by SnowMachine)

          SUPPORT MAG PROJECTS

Mags be busy or they just don't tell us what's up...let me know what I can add here:

UnofficialAlpine.com Shameless self-promotion here. UA has been dedicated to keeping the Alpine Meadows community alive and well since 2008. Fuck...we are boomers. If that's not your thing, then don't bother. Ski reports, weather reports, bitching about parking reservations...we got it.

Patchskiing.net Vets has like 3056 consecutive months under his belt and he does a damn good job of documenting those trips. If you are looking for ideas on where to ski to maintain your streak, there's probably not a better resource.

Spence Sez It's not about skiing, but Dookey is an incredible movie reviewer and you will be entertained.

Another volunteer opportunity--Truckee Roundhouse makerspace,, for woodworkers, metalworkers, ceramicists, textile workers, and electronics buffs--volunteers get use of the space off hours. There are various paid membership options as well but I think we might have a wait list. For woodworkers--we have a 20 inch planer and a 20 inch belt sander and 40 in lathe.

Nice thread full of good information. I agree that the world has basically gone to shit and it's not worth watching the news so I can see the government being shut down while we prop up the Argentine economy, and the Coast Guard buying a couple private plane for Kristi Noem's security. Im ready for skiing like never before.

I'm thinking about utilizing my Ikon pass for a few early season days at Palisades. First off, what kind of conditions can be expected in mid-December? Is it worthwhile most years? Second, where's the best place to stay other than right at the base? Tahoe City or Truckee plusses and minuses? Thanks!

December can be anything from deep to WROD. 12/11/22 was one of my better days ever.
