Went to see Otiel and Friends last night at a small venue in rural Maine… walked in half an hour before the show started and strolled up to the stage front and center. Nice jams with Otiel on his new Irwin Wolf tribute bass, Kimock also playing an Irwin Wolf, and Melvin taking us to church all night on his organ.

I caught WET LEG on Day 1 of their 2-day stint at the Fox Theatre in downtown Oakland, CA on Tuesday evening 9/30/25.
i urge y’all to catch them if you can as they are definitely at that point where they are either gonna break HUGE and become arena rock stars or implode .
my only complaint was that I wished I had seen them a year or so ago in a smaller venue.
but they are tight musically and their light show is sweet. And frontwoman Rhian Teasdale plays up the sexy vixen schtick to the hilt.Comment

All Them Witches are touring this winter including where most of us Western mags live. Going to catch PDX and BOI, maybe Seattle too."All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. We must never, ever be boring."Comment

Saw David Byrne in Boston last night. Outstanding show. He's holding up very well, A lot like American Utopia in presentation but maybe ? Talking Heads tunes, which was nice, not that i dislike his newer stuff but still. A lot of cool video too. First night of a long international tour, check it out, it's probably coming somewhere near you.Comment

DOOM GONG
Caught this outfit from Kentucky last night in Reno.
they are a hoot.
2 drummers
A percussionist ( with a giant gong!) who also plays trumpet
A keyboardist who also plays trumpet
A mellotronist
A bassist
And the band leader who plays guitar and looks like the love child of Macaulay Culkin and Emilio Estevez
They unleashed some jammy squonk, did a respectable jam rendition of a Rogers and Hammerstein classic, and overall just came with the joyous exuberance.
tour dates in the link.Comment

Violent Femmes - Flynn Theater Burlington VT. Since my formative years were the 80’s I was very familiar with the band, but never seen them live. Surprised how good there still were, if you have a chance to see them, it’s worth it. First drum kit I’ve seen that included a Weber grill. He played it well.

I caught Elbow in Seattle last night.. There are a couple more shows on the west coast this week (Oakland and LA) and I can’t believe they aren’t sold out. Beautiful songs and an impressive supporting string/brass/clarinet section. Check ‘em out if you can make it.

I am planning to hit the Oakland Elbow show on Wednesday, though I have not been able to convince anyone to join me.
they have been on my hit list for years…
wasn’t able to make it to TV on the Radio Sunday, though. My buddy said I missed a banger.Comment

Elbow put on a fantastic show on Sunday, third time I've caught them and second time at the Showbox. Excellent mix of old stuff and newer. House, I was ~10 ft right where that pic was taken.
Move upside and let the man go through...Comment

I hit up this festival in downtown Reno that first weekend of October.
It’s the second year I have gone.
They block off a section of the 4th Street “Brewery District.”
This year they erected an outdoor stage in a lot behind one of the regular venues, so they had a larger stage, but most of the shows take place inside small breweries (plus a meadery and one dive bar.)
I am not usually a big festival guy, but this one is small enough and all the venues are close to one another and mostly indoors, so it’s kind of cool.
The rschedules sometimes conflict and are definitely geared toward those who like to pop around and see a few songs from many different bands (I, on the other hand, am one of those folks who prefers to see a band’s entire set.)
Anyway, I saw a few bands I’d seen before—Sego and Tropa Magica—plus several that were new to me:
Spirit Award
Hillfolk Noir
Packaging
Doom Gong
My Dallas Teens
Combo Tezeta
All these acts get a major thumbs up and I recommend checking them out if they swing through a venue near you.

Elbow was pretty damn bueno last night at The Fox in Oakland.
While the venue was only about 1/3 full, the band played like it was a full house and were decidedly professional in that respect.
Despite the meager turnout, those in attendance seemed to be mega fans, singing the lyrics to just about every song and engaging in some serious crowd participation throughout the duration of the 100+ minute set.
Frontman Guy Garvey had the crowd wrapped around his fingers and was the epitome of the utmost charismatic crooner.
The band delivered their trademark romantic prog stylings with grace, humor, and serious umph!
While the entire set was top notch, “Station Approach” was my high point and it brought tears to my eyes.
It’s only taken me 20 years to see these guys, but am glad I finally did.Comment
