Lou Reeds "Sweet Jane" is one of my all time favorites, but Margo Timmons Cowboy Junkie version is smokin' hot.

Placebo - Running Up that hill

        The original is pretty awful.

Hendrix' version of "All Along the Watchtower" comes to mind.

Beck's Record Club (feat. St. Vincent and Liars) crushing the hell out of INXS' "Never Tear Us Apart":

Runner up - The Faces taking on "Maybe I'm Amazed", although you might want to just listen because Rod Stewart's euro-trash stubble, white jacket and stage moves pretty much shatter the unintentional comedy scale:

We heard you in our twilight caves, one hundred fathom deep below, for notes of joy can pierce the waves, that drown each sound of war and woe.

Aretha Franklin's version of "Respect" is pretty OK.

I also like Sun Kil Moon's take on "Trucker's Atlas" by Modest Mouse.

Yup. Although not the case here, Hendrix was so awesome it's kind of like cheating (e.g. Wild Thing).

The Ataris version of The Boys of Summer

Quiet Drive's version of Time After Time (more a case of a totally lame song being redone into something good)
                          The killer awoke before dawn.

if anyone says Johnny Cash's version Of Hurt I will slap them. This usually comes from people that don't know Trent Reznor or the point of the song.... but it still amazes me.
