As promised, got the R87s out today. Definitely unideal conditions but better than nothing.
Ski: 175 R87 Comp build
Location: Alpine Meadows, CA
Weather: Toasty, 50 degrees at base at 9am, 68 at 11:30am when I stopped
Me: 5'5", 145ish. Born and raised east coast skier, lower level collegiate race experience. Certainly not the best skier on the mountain or a pro, but if you saw me on a groomer carving you'd get the impression I know what I am doing ;p just don't watch me ski west coast style trees
Bindings/Boot: STH2s and Technica Mach1 130s
First off, nothing to report on the build quality that hasn't already been said. Absolutely impeccable. I did not touch the tune, just threw on a coat of molybdenum wax + yellow swix race wax to match our wet dirty snow conditions today.
Now the skiing: If you have ever been on a GS race ski and thought to yourself "I want this but wider", then this is the ski for you. My first run was a wide open groomer, it was absurdly soft (leaving deep trenches) but as soon as I laid the skis over on edge they locked in on a perfectly natural turn. The feedback on transition was also good, not quite the "launch" you'd see from something like a race spec slalom ski but more of a "thanks for loading me, here is the energy back in full". While they were locked in the tails could release to scrub speed with no problem. I never once felt like I was being taken for a ride or nervous about catching an edge like some skinnier skis can do.
I went on a hunt and found some west facing stuff that had not yet softened yet. On the firm stuff the skis held an edge very well. It was also much easier to release the tails and play with turn shapes when desired.
As far as speed limit, I was hitting up to 50 through spring mush without any chatter whatsoever.
In the name of science I decided to try a steep moguled east facing run. I knew right away this was a mistake when I dropped in and sunk 6"+ into wet heavy mank. While everything up to this point was showing the skis as easy to ski, I was quickly reminded that they are flat tailed heavy metal skis. I ended up a little backseat and almost lost it as the tails dug in. I'm sure in good or even better than trash conditions they would have been great.
These are definitely skis that like to be driven and go fast. I'm excited to be able to use them as a mid winter low tide ski when tahoe inevitably gets its three week long dry spell. They'll also make a great early season groomer ski. They're exactly what I was looking for: a race construction ski with enough width and a versatile enough shape to ski in conditions that aren't race course perfect.
I wonder, how many more ski designs does Marshall have drawn up just waiting to get asked about? If I draw a chalk pentagram and whisper *garbones* does the autocad file just pop into existence on his laptop?
