Ok so the Mammut Trion 50 came in the mail and I just loaded it up with 35lbs. Overall my initial impressions are that it's pretty great.

Its avy (or front pocket) is very well sized easily enough for my Evac 7 shovel and I can remove and replace it pretty easily with the pack fully loaded. Check one for the Trion 50.

It's got daisy chains on the side and nice ice axe carry, as well as loops for trekking poles. Check another for the Trion 50.

It's got great backpanel access with a water pouch sleeve and an interior mesh key pocket. Check yet another for the Trion 50.

It's also got these really great phone / snack pockets on the backpack straps that are great. The pocket on the hip harness doesn't fit my big iPhone plus though. Probably would fit a regular iPhone.

It's also got side pockets for waterbottles and/or pickets.

So what's bad? Well I'm worried about a few things:

    - It's lightweight (1550g) so the materials used don't feel so burly and the padding on the pack seems questionable for long-distance with heavy loads. It's got the smallest hip belt strap I've ever seen on a pack this size.

    - The mesh panels on the side pockets worry me that they'd get super cut up by a ski or something - I'm not sure why they went mesh here? Same goes, but less so, for the phone/snack pockets.

    - The brain only has one pocket, bummer here but not the end of the world.

    What else do I wish?

I wish it was 10L bigger and with the suspension and materials of the Mountain Hardwear Direttissma 50. Otherwise, I'm very pleasantly surprised. I feel like I'm likely to keep this pack and see how it works out for me. This is kind of what I hoped the Patagonia Descensionist would be to be honest, so I'm excited about it. I would call it a bigger more featured version of that. It seems like it could also work great for summer backpacking. I'll need to buy a helmet carrier though that will be easy.

I have not checked how it cinches down when not full, so that's on the to-do list.

I never found this unicorn pack you want for.

But North Face Prophet 65 has worked really well for me in this capacity. Doesn't have all the bells/whistles on OP's wish list, but in my case good enough for who it's for. Can carry +2 full camps using the outside straps.

Light, great fit, skis well, carries weight well. Good for single night adventures and expeditions. It's been my go to forever.

        Feel free to borrow.

Mammut Trion Light 50 is a sweet pack for multiday ski touring. I believe it's discontinued, but is still available at some sites online (https://www.proskiservice.com/mammut...-backpack.html)

Resurrecting this thread now that longer days and multi day spring trips are on the horizon. Anyone have a multi day ski pack they’re stoked on? I’m in the same vein as OP but not quite as picky.

            My ideal pack would be:
            - 50L - 55L
            - Rolltop
            - avy pocket or sleeve in main compartment
            - A frame carry. (Bonus for diagonal)
            - load lifter straps

Just bought a cirque 45 but it’s returnable if I find something better. If they made that pack a roll top (so you could extend to 50ish) and load lifter strap, it would be. 99% of the way there for me.

But the carry system doesn’t feel great and the volume is a tad small for overnight gear, layers, avy gear, glacier gear, and food for 4 days. I’m not far off with my setup. But more volume would be nice.

I’d also not like to spend more than. $250, which ultimately might be the biggest limitation.

Mammut peyragude 35+10. Great carry, good suspension.

Then add two superlight bags for rent and shedding bag, strap them on the outside and you've got a light pack good for 7 days, food, and everything else you would have to have someone sew daisy chains, but that really easy.

Sounds like you're describing the HMG Ice pack in a 3400. I've got one in like new condition I'd sell for a good price. Lmk if you're keen on it. Frame size large.

ETA: doesn't have an avy gear sleeve but it's still one of the best alpine climbing packs I've used. Only selling because I got a 45 NWD Cilo pack

Thanks tgapp. Does the HMG have load lifter straps? The photos on their website didn’t look like it. That was the main reason HMG wasn’t in the running (and new they’re a little out of the current budget).

If it has the ski carry upgrades I’ll get in line.

Current iteration of Patagonia Descentionist 40L:
Roll-top with top strap, separate external avy-pocket, side access zipper, load-lifters, minimalist belt with two pockets and gear loops.
40L only but looks like more than +10L with roll-top expanded.
If the main body is not made of light paper shit fabric - looks perfect.

Really fragile and it doesn't carry well, skis and boots on it, forget it.

Damn. The descensionist pack was definitely checking boxes on paper.

I might have to take a look at one anyway. Seems like it wouldn’t carry worse than the Cirque 45.

I’m a big fan of my recent HMG fanboy status, and after some multiday outings, don’t miss the load lifters much after all.
Lifters and dedicated tool pocket was hardline requirements for me before, but I’m fine without em now and stoked on the construction, weight and toughness. I’ve got a porter 4400 in woven dyneema i got second hand; very pleased. Daily tours in a porter 2400.
                              Previous pack was Descensionist 40.

                                Multi-Day Ski Mountaineering Pack?

I’m a fan of my Mammut Spindrift Guide 45+ (discontinued), carries great and checks all your boxes; would spring for the Trion if I were in the market now. There’s also the TNF Cobra in a 52l and 60l that only lack diagonal carry, and avy gear fits in the oversize crampon pocket.

For multi-day with a full pack, diagonal carry is going to move the skis far from your center of gravity and actually add to the effort of just hiking, which I think is why I think many of the larger packs only have A-frame carry. However, if you’re using it for day trips also and will have things cinched up, I can see your desire for that feature.
