Polyass vs main forums in 2025

Not saying this is a deep insight but it is becoming increasingly difficult to draw clear lines on what goes in the polyass basement and get generally ignored.

Cars and trucks have always been a common topic here. As electric tech filtered in, the resulting discussions generally didn't need to address political dimensions. Now it's intertwined regardless of what we might hope or think.

The Park City patroller situation would've had a long thread at any point in TGR history; now there's change afoot impacting the concept and impact of unions in general.

This community has strong US Canadian ties, and for many of us the absurd rhetoric re ignoring CA Sovereignty is absolutely a community issue.

Like many of you I have friends directly impacted by USFS funding situation, including avy center staffing, and who would argue this isn't a core topic of a ski forum like this?

Wildfire strategy and programs, climate change, etc etc. The list of topics goes on.

Assuming the forum software gets fixed eventually and the forums have some tangible future ahead, it seems to me handling conversations that dip in and out of political discussion seems to be increasingly necessary if we assume we're going to discuss the usual topics historically residing in the main forums

Well, all the and the like does take the edge off of the political rhetoric. Hard to take offense when you can't understand it. I don't follow polyass but it does seem that when discussions in other fora have drifted into the polyass recently they have stayed pretty civil. I guess people don't want to be responsible for polyassing a good thread.
It is a problem, and not just in the TGR's, that everything in America has become political. Wildfire, plane crashes. It's pitiful.

Don’t you get it? Trump changed everything. Everything is all his fault backed up by his inbred mouth breathing smooth brain supporters.

Other than the new Gaza Riviera. That is going to be bigly awesome. Like casa Bonita from the river to the sea.

No deep insights at 4:30am. It is unfortunate that conversations that may include a political component now can go off the rails. But elections have consequences and we just have to deal with the emboldened as best we can, until the sun comes back out and eventually pushes them back into the holes they crawled out of.

Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

The orange shitstain has made previously everyday topics of discussion polyass. Fact.

Things were easier before people became sensitive bitches on here and in real life. Maybe age has made us fragile or we’ve allowed the real world and the internet to blur the edge a little too much. Remember the times when we could say some pretty crude stuff in PR and then go ski and together and be merry in the tangible world? I’m afraid to say the good old days are not yet to come and already happened.

I bet most here would do just fine sharing a quad chair or a skin track. Internet isn't real life.

I get tangled up in some of these threads and it's a bit demoralizing, but I'm confident it would not spill into face to face interactions. In fact, I think embarrassment would be the primary emotion when two adults with opposing political views bump into each other in a ski area parking lot.

If the initial post is polyass, it should be in polyass.

If the initial post is not inherently political but it eventually devolves into politics (as so much does these days), the thread should stay wherever it is. But the resident polititools should exercise self restraint when cunting up non polyass threads.

Some people sure take the padded room here so seriously that I would bet it consumes real life time thoughts. I’m guilty of it at times. You say there could be embarrassment. Maybe that’s the barometer that the line is blurring.

IMO the line has been blurring for a while, as in the Ukraine and 50 Years to the day threads. The Canada thread was probably doomed from the start.
I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

We cant forget Covid either, as that blurred all sorts of lines and generally fucked up a good percent of the American population.

But- If an otherwise normal thread in the PR turns into a scum of poliassery, do you move the thread to the basement OR do you give the posters a timeout/warning/ban?

I hate moving threads to poliass, especially if they have been generally awesome. But we have also seen the absolute meltdowns from individual posters when they’ve been given timeouts. Which is best?

Yes, we understand your opinion matters and you might or might not have strong convictions for your beliefs but, please, try to be more than just the insulting douchebag who has little to offer beyond condescending put downs. Humor, wit and intelligence carry the dialogue much further than repetitious childish remarks designed to simply irritate. Failure to adhere this most basic principle of forum interaction could land you a strike, if continued ad nauseam. That would leave you only two more strikes before it’s hasta la bye-bye. If your only intent in interacting on TGR is to stir shit, you will be escorted out of the forums and the gates will be locked.
Seems simple enough no matter what forum you are in.
