The amercian ambassador pointed out
" " Cutting Mexico out of the current North American free trade deal "may not be the best path to take," says U.S. Ambassador to Canada David Cohen.
"I come from a school of 'if it ain't broke don't fix it,' when we have this really incredible, incredible agreement in CUSMA, by the way, an agreement that was negotiated by Donald Trump," Cohen said, in an interview on CTV's Question Period airing on Sunday.

Probably not a good idea to impose tariffs on stuff we don't make or on materials we don't have. A case can be made to impose tariffs on products that are the result of stolen intellectual property or being sold below cost due to government subsidies. It is also reasonable to use them to support the emergence of local sources or sources from friendly countries. It is not a good idea to rely on a hostile state for critical products and materials. Before imposing the tariffs, however, we should be finding or developing other sources. China is currently the only source for rare earths. We can't afford to piss them off until we find other sources.Comment

Unintended consequences.
Fucking rent seeking is what tariffs are. Save a job in Pittsburgh and cut a hundred more around the country.
Anyone remember Bernie’s bobble head bill? Wanted only American made goods in federal gift shops. He, rightly so, got lambasted especially by the right and now it’s the right’s platform."Let's be careful out there."Comment

My prediction if Trump actually follows through with his proposed tariffs, the rest of the world gangs up on the US via trade war. We push countries to align with China’s interests. The world is united in its disdain for Trumps America and are far more willing to endure economic pain than the US.
