yeah they're expensive but the whole company is centered around a goal of preserving old world food traditions. there are a good number of items at caputos that represent hundreds-year long culinary traditions and would have gone extinct by now were it not for caputos. they're pretty fucking awesome. their classes are amazing too - basically you get $100 worth of groceries, a two hour class, and a 10% discount, all for $100. very worth your time if you're a foodie.
that preservas/tinned fish class kinda changed our lifeComment

Ok so after reading these all, its really based on the chocolate and the cheese and nothing else. Id imagine that doesnt put them in any class as "one of the best importers". Its a small market they cater too. Also seemed like each article was just opinion. When you say something like "one of the best importers" they should actually be rated as such. The may be one of the tops for chocolate and cheese.yeah so they actually have a sister importing company that has exclusive distribution rights to a number of ultra high end european brands across a number of different market segments. they're widely recognized as having both the largest and best bean to bar chocolate program in the US (again, with exclusive rights to a number of really amazing chocolatiers), and there is just a ton of media about them. i'm not making this up. they're a big deal in southern european specialty grocery.
here they are in New York Magazine:
You too can have a bag of just-caught mussels, a bottle of beautifully aged soy sauce, even a whole duck sent to you overnight.

spruce eats:
i could go on, they are the real shit, not just for Utah but nationally

lol okay bud, they're not kroger, you're right, their lettuce probably can't compete with that national brand lettuce. idk, i'm not a big lettuce guy, you'd probably know more about that.Ok so after reading these all, its really based on the chocolate and the cheese and nothing else. they really specialize in chocolate, cheese, tinned fish, and olive oil, with strong offerings in pasta and charcuterie as well. probably in that order. but yes, they are a big deal nationally and yes, utah does have a couple real gems even if there's a lot of garbage here too.Comment

I didn't mean to imply that they were interchangeable. All I'm saying is that anything that's $30/lb is strictly a special occasion treat for me, while the TJs sardines I can afford to eat every day.Comment

i'm a huge fan of all TJ's tinned fish
one of my favorite foods on longer ski tours or winter camping trips
$ for $ I don't think it can be beat

more opinion articles. Im sure there are also plenty of other specialty food markets that others have opinions on as well. Still not seeing a big nationwide footprint like you are implying. Far as I can tell, aside from some foodie articles, they dont even register on an big EU importer map.lol okay bud, they're not kroger, you're right, their lettuce probably can't compete with that national brand lettuce. idk, i'm not a big lettuce guy, you'd probably know more about that.

They are the best that I knew of in the intermountain west(ish). FYI Kroger wasnt on my list of importers that I noticed?Comment

the problem is twofold: 1. you are conflating "grocery importers" with "speciality grocery importers" and 2. you're conflating size with quality. the article you listed is a bunch of huge scale food importers, what's your point? i'm sure you can get a much bigger selection of Nespresso in new jersey, but no one is arguing that here.
for being a specialty importer, caputos is at the very top of the game in the US. are they the best at everything? no. do they have the freshest in french lettuce? unlikely. what about the finest in spanish cat litter or moldovan baby wipes? also no. chocolate, cheese, preservas, and a handful of other things. that's their game. you don't get into NYMag by being a bunch of hacks, and whether or not you like it, their opinion carries much more weight than yours does.
anyway, back to cooking, did a tomato crab chowder the other night that was simple and dope and yummy. it sucks that we can't get good crab in utah, but this was good enough.Comment

not in NJ but thanks. You're all right Caputos is the premier EU importer in the USofA...got it...im sure its the huge foodie scene that makes this happen, or is it the large italian population of SLC that brings such impressive importers.
As mentioned its good, but if you think having a good cheese and chocolate selection makes them great well, I don't know what to tell ya. Every posted article is about cheese and chocolate. Had the original post said "best at importing cheese and chocolate" i would have said nothing, but to claim that Caputos is some force in the food import industry is straight up laughable.
Feel free to carry on...jtran...im sure you're culinary knowhow comes from the great cuisine of backwoods vt.Comment
