Where to Buy Good, Solid Wood Furniture?

We finally purchased a replacement for the $75 yard sale mattress we've been sleeping on for the past 5 years. Our new Casper mattress should be here in a week.

We need a bed to put it on. I've been looking for beds online from Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, CB2, West Elm and Room and Board. We're looking for a solid wood bed and not a laminate/particle board setup like you'd find at Ikea. If we could find a decent bed for under $800 that would be great. We'd be willing to pay $1,400 or so if it was something that justified the price.

I hate dealing with low rent salespeople, so I really don't want to buy from a furniture store like American Furniture Warehouse and their ilk.

Where else should we look? Also, anyone know of a handmade or custom furniture maker in Colorado that has decent prices?

      Bedworks of Maine: http://thebedworksofmaine.com/Beds/index.htm

We have two of these. Rock solid, excellent quality, good value, excellent service.

We didn't want headboards or footboards, so we just got The Yarmouth: http://thebedworksofmaine.com/Beds/The_Yarmouth.htm

            Yeah I edited.

I do think that something simple like a bed could be made by a local craftsman cheaper than one of the better furniture houses.

So are those bland ones from Maine for that matter. I like mid century and Danish design.

You can get a great bedframe on CL for next to nothing with a little patience.I know because I have sold a few that cost a lot and later were worth almost nothing when I sold

I got one of these and attached a nice headboard. You'd be surprised how much rock solid stability adds to the comfort and feel. Especially the huge heavy mattresses:

That's not the solid wood one I pictured but like you said. To each his own. Keep up the good work now that Hugh is gone.

FWIW we go some really nice furniture at AFW for a great price and never talked to a salesperson. In your price range, that's probably where you will find the best bargain, without going used, and there's nothing wrong with that. Like mentioned before, CL can be full of great finds. A friend of mine just picked up an entire Ethan Allen bedroom set for under $2K.

Also, try looking around the antique stores on Broadway.
