ETA: ok, so it looks like if you use the “add a link” button you can not add a photo using the “camera” icon, but instead just use the “paperclip attach” icon to add a pic. Looks like you can’t add a photo from the web though or it erases your entire post.
I’d say this is a bug.

It almost feels like they believe the job is done. I tried to monkey around in the admin control panel last night to see if I could find a setting to enable avatars to no avail. I did manage to disappear Danno's "D" avatar, so I got that going for me. I know just enough to be dangerous and I don't really want to face the maggot wrath when I accidentally brick the board.Comment

I can try to upload my new avatar in edit avatar, but it doesn't work. Tried a scaled one and one that was actually 100x100 pixels. It sat there "working" for a while then:- An unexpected error was returned: 'fwrite(): Argument #1 ($stream) must be of type resource, bool given'

I’d say this is a bug.
Don’t use either of those buttons to attach a picture.
use the upload attachment button below the smiley faces.
when you click on that, it will ask you where you it want to look for your pictures.
once it’s done working it’ll ask you what size picture you want to insert. If you don’t choose one, you’ll get those tiny pictures that you have to click on to see.
