Montrose Ride 8/8/24

I have to run to Montrose (Olathe) to pick up a raft trailer on 8/8.

Going to take the bike and do a morning ride before. I should be able to get to town by 8:30 (or 8 if need be).

Any suggestions on rides? Any mags want to shuttle Whole Uncolada?

I know it is late notice…so an early out and back on Sidewinder might be my fall back plan??? I know is it will be hot…so maybe bad idea? If not, any suggestions where to start?

We stopped in at the Electric Hills trail system last fall. Really well built and interesting trails by the same guy that built the Ridgway RAT system. Highly recommended!

Sounds awesome and thank you…but my left shoulder can’t handle slalom anymore and I have never been on a surf or wake board.

I don’t want to give up the months of riding to get it fixed…lol

I figured I would leave basalt at 6 and be done riding in time for lunch. So hopefully hitting downhill by 10 or 10:30

I could shoot up to the telluride bike park, but that is another 1.5 hours. Powderhorn doesn’t open till 2pm on Thursdays.

I am a chicken shit when it comes to heat…so maybe that is the play. Ha Or just come home right away and hit Snowmass.

There’s also the trails above town in Paonia. You could be riding by 7:45 and their south/west facing for sun. I bought a bike from a guy over there years ago but haven’t been back to ride.

I rode Sidewinder years ago and liked it, but it has minimal shade, plenty of up and down and trends a bit downhill as you get away from the trailhead (Eagle Rd). Not ideal in the heat. If you do ride it, exit via Eagle Valley - super cool trail.

Uncolada was fun but I'd avoid it if there have been recent storms. There is a section of death mud in the middle just before the Spring Creek access. The mud was so slick and bike was so gummed up I couldn't push or pull it. And it didn't help the trail is u-shaped so no matter what I'd slip slide into the low point where mud was worst. And brush was thick enough I couldn't really go around. It was only 3-400ft to the access trail and I had a hell of a time getting there.

Thanks everyone. I think I will take a quick spin at electric hills, and bring my fly rod. Probably less miserable with the heat.

I have ridden the Paonia trails with the family…fun area for kids for sure. We camp down there 2 or 3 times a year, so get time to ride. Good suggestion.

You'll be early enough that EH won't be too hot. RAT will be ~5 degrees cooler basically any time though if you truly hate the heat. EH is techier, RAT is easy flow. Happy to post route recs for either if you'd like.

Uncolada should be dusty dry, I'd do a lap with you but I've got work. You can pedal this loop, it is ~8 miles of climbing on pavement then dirt road. One of the better descents around, but it is loose moto trail. https://www.mtbproject.com/trail/977907

It's too hot to ride Peach Valley/Sidewinder this time of year.

I'm not a fisherman but I think the fishing right here in town is kind of meh this time of year, better down by Ridgway Reservoir.

Also, there is construction between here and Ridgway in multiple spots with alternating traffic. Plan on 50 minutes drive time instead of 30.

Awesome, thanks for the recs. I think I will make a game time decision on EH or RAT. Maybe this fall I can get down for some shuttle laps when we get an October snow storm.

Looks like Pa-co-Chu-Puk is fishing well right now and tailwaters tend to be the most consistent this time of year with a full reservoir.

I appreciate everyone sharing their knowledge and will post up some pics tomorrow of the days.

October is usually a pretty good time to ride around here, if we do get snow on the plateau its usually not too much to ride.

If you ride EH, Amp Ridge and Ohmward Bound are the must-do descents.

Thanks for all the advice. I road flux capacitor, to shock therapy and then back out Amp Ridge.

Fun area, but I needed to switch my Hightower back to the stock link for that kind of riding to help someone of my skill level avoid some pedal strikes. The ride didn’t have much downhill and was definitely rocky techy trail riding.

Not what I am used to, but still fun. Beautiful trails.

Hit the Uncompahgre for an hour and half to cool down. Caught four good rainbows to start, then things kind of shut off around 12:30. Pic is the first fish if day and smallest. Nice river.

And got the new raft trailer home.
