St. George Trails

I'm heading down to St. George this week and usually just take my climbing gear down to Zion but my devotion to biking in Moab has been turned to ignorance of Southern Utah biking so I'll be taking my bike this time. I've heard that St. George has some awesome trails and just want to know how to find them. Any helpers?

ya its going to be really hot... Gooseberry is of course awesome riding and have heard there is usually a breeze blowing there at least. Riding early morning might be tolerable.

Gooseberry is a lot of fun. I was there in May, and it was cool in the AM. Not too sure about this time of year though. It's a really cool environment though. Pretty rough ride driving out there though.

Be prepared to ride really early or late in the day, temps can be pretty brutal down there. I'd recommend stopping at Over the Edge in Hurricane (right at the base of the hill before you head out of town up towards Gooseberry, Little Creek, JEM, etc.) it's a cool little shop and they'll be able to give you the scoop on the different trails in the area. If a little more driving isn't out of the question I'd highly recommend going to Thunder Mountain or maybe Brian Head for the cooler temps. If you have a whole day to kill maybe start early 6-7ish and ride the North Rim to South Rim loop on Gooseberry then kill the hot portion of the day driving to Thunder Mountain and loop that one to finish the day. If I remember correctly Thunder Mountain is about 100 miles from Hurricane but well worth the trip, especially if it's too damn hot to ride during the afternoon anyways.

honestly go the extra couple of hours to Virgin River Rim or Brainhead area this time of year.

with that said I rode gooseberry at 106 degrees at 6pm in the evening and I didnt die it was actually quite fun. these is no climbing and it is breezy.

What type of bike... AM, XC, DH? I'll second or third that Brian Head should be cooler weather. If you're set on St. George area and will be in Zion to climb, Bill at Zion Cycles in Rockville/Zion is one the coolest peeps that ever was. He knows "ALL" the beta on the trails in Hurricane, Virgin, Grafton and the Zion area. If you ask him nicely, there's a decent chance he'll even be your personal guide. If you're in St. George proper, look at Barrel trail and read the info from http://www.utahmountainbiking.com/ as stated above.

What type of bike... AM, XC, DH?

I ride an AM bike.
Thanks for all the info. I think I'll plan on riding up at Brian Head resort but will be down in St. George for a few days and will check it all out.
