At least get a cheap saltwater floater with a stiffer core/coating. Rio Avid series if you don't want to drop a lot of coin.

Actually ignore that guy^ I have a brand new 8 weight Rio quickshooter 2 which is now the tarpon taper I believe. They dyed a bunch the wrong color a while back and sent them to me since they didn't know what to do with them. Super baby tarpon line and it will work just fine for permit and bonerfish. PM your addy and it's yours.

Thanks so much for this offer shit like that is what helps make this place special. I was set to pm you when shit got fucked up at the Mrs. work and we werent looking like we were gonna go. She managed to find coverage, but we only got 4 days. I mooched a 8 weight floater off my pops but thanks again for the offer.
So another couple ttipper and tgr jong powderpond and his wife joined us.

Flew into Belize city and puddlejumped over to Ambergis Cay and stayed at the belizian shores resort. Nice modestly priced accomindations. Happened to show up a week late and the week before stellar fishing conditions changed to windy, partially cloudy, meh.
the mrs. had promised I could do a day guided, but the 1st 2 days sucked and none of the guide or dive boats were even going out. We did do some cool snorkling in the Ho Min reserve should of just stayed in the boat and had someone hand feed my flies to the giant pet permit that hang out there. Watching the mrs. upchuckin her salty crocodile bbq to chum up the sharks and rays in said named alley was well lets go with entertaining.

Still hoping to get a day in around back on the less windy leward side of the cay I headed down to the el pescador lodge just down the beach. Now I had searched and scoped out their website and it showed a day guided at ~ $330. Of course there wasnt anybody in the shop that knew anything about fishin and I would need to come back. Well all of a sudden a day trip costs $987 belize (2to1 american $) Belize is funny that way if they think they can get over on your gringo ass theyll try. On the other hand not much regulation there you can find anyone on the beach who knows someone who has what you seek.
With the exception of the dive thing and certifications which I never really understood and Im glad skiings not that way were you show up at a resort or yurt and need your meadow skipping cert, your + 45 degree chute cert, tight tree cert, or super deep over the shoulder cold smoke blower cert.
So it may have been an honest mistake never bother going back to find the fishing coridinater chick that ran the op.
My bro pp had fished the green w/ me and circus nymphed em up good but I was sceptible of his ability to throw far enough to make it worth his while to join me.
We ended up booking an all day snorkle fish shore lunch on the beach trip through white sands dive shop for $400 for 4 of us. After an agrivating hour wait for the bait boat to show up we headed out. Our young guide was good super personal, and aside from asking every 5 minutes if we were having fun great. We nailed a few small jacks trigger fish and other asorted reef fish and did some snorkling. The boat wasnt a flats boat had the suncover and trying to throw a fly in the wind on a full boat seemed like a recipy for clusterfuckage so I just fished the spinning rigs. We headed into shore to throw the dipnet and re up or bait supply. As we got in the water got nervous and I manage to find the culprit a nice jack and hook it up. After a decent fight, which inclueded a few hail mary dipping the rod down under the boat and hoping the line would clear the prop put this one on the gaff and later in our tummies
          .
Shore lunch was great and i got out and tagged a few more smaller jacks off the beach

There was a laggon right across the dirt road off the beach and I had been casting to bones every day, but Id spaced the stripping basket and every resort would have guys cleaning and raking the beach everyday and they would just take the piles of seaweed palmfrouds and trash and drag it over to the lagoon
and dump it so the banks were a shitshow of line catching crap and the schools were maddenly just out of my range. I managed a few follows and shook hands with one, but was skunkin out on the bones. I was throwing earthtone patterns that the guys whoed been to belize at the local slc shops reccomended.
I finally found a fishing bartender who clued me into trying bright colors. Should of figured a fish that resembled a whitey would dig the shiny bling.
I decided to ask a property owner if I could cast off of his pier on the lagoon and gave him a few $$$. The winds had died down and I managed to
get my casting act togather and start stickin bones.
Id heard about the fighting abilities of these silver bullets but was still a bit shocked when a sub 20 in. fish bolted into a drag screeching backin run across the lagoon
It would take a 1/2 hour or so for them to regroup and settle down after each fish but I managed a good 1/2 dozen and of course was late for the water taxi back to Belize City.
Damn if someone was to figure out how to cross breed those bones with whiteys and create a fresh water version I doubt Id fish trout anymore. Im having permit dreams now and trying to figure out a way to get back on a fishing trip or find an investor to pick up any myrid of cheap land or deserted resorts to start a lodge.
Blurred had it right when he said Belize City is probably one of the scetchiest places on earth and the wife didnt enjoy our high speed taxi ride in Rasta Stevies bullet riddled corrola complete with a 12er of empties rolling around Rasta stevie knew everyone and would honk to the scetchy dudes I woulnt even make eye contact with and blew past the police checkpoint doing 30 over the limit w/ a honk and a wave.
          Bones

          brewskis

          and boobies

= a damn good trip although shorter than we wanted
The bud was nothing to write home about but the highschool flashback of 10 minutes to clean and roll a fatty was nostalgic

Headed to Placencia/Hopkins for a week in mid-November.

            Any surf fishing opportunities around?

Any fly guide recs? Like to spend a day or two on a boat. Old lady and I can flop a fly around, but not experts at casting.

Worth bringing my own salt set up?

Well. I’ve only finished southern Belize, but you can Internet search for guides, most are perfectly fine. Then you can contact them to see if you should bring your own set up. They might have better stuff and you can just use theirs, but if you have your own stuff then while walking the beach, it’s fun to cast. After the day, fishing with them, you’ll get an idea of what works, and strategies.

I would highly recommend bringing your own gear - including flies. A lot of the guides who guide for lodges will free lance and give you a much better deal but won’t supply anything but a boat and expertise. I will send you a PM with my go to guide Floyd’s digits. You can always go to the marina on Sittee River and just ask around. It’s not a great bonefish destination but in my opinion it might be the best permit fishing in Belize

Just got back from Ambergris. Couple guide recs that you can book directly and cut out the middleman (e.g. El Pescador wants $750/day plus tips. Fuck that).

George Bradley <flyfishingwithgeorge@gmail.com> - Old school guy, 4th generation born/raised on the island. Been guiding since '77. Still has a lot of energy and stoked to be out there every day. His cousin polls while he's up on the deck with you finding fish. Best eyes of any guide I've been out with.

Hilian Martinez. Born and raised on the island as well. Books via DMs on Facebook or IG. https://www.instagram.com/hilianmartinez/ Only drawback is he's booked pretty solid Dec-June.

I'd post pics, but no worky.

Altun Ha ruin is the closest to Belize City.
Pretty good fishing in the river, (Belize River Lodge), mostly Tarpon, they also head out to the nearby reefs. Also some single day charters right out of Belize City. Otherwise it’s head out to the atolls and cayes.
