I started with the wordpress base (and still use its CMS), but slowly edited and adapted over the last couple years. It's still 90% wordpress code. I just edited some stuff to allow Lightbox (JavaScript picture plugin) and some other stuff to have priority loading.

As for webhosts, I'm currently using Hostmonster and they've done a good job, but I've probably gone through 4 or 5 companies in the last couple years and haven't found one that can consistently host for more than a few months.

Bluehost was pretty solid (I'm fairly certain hostmonster is a small piece of that company)
Dreamhost was aweful (and has no phone support)

I've heard hostgator is good, but haven't tried them.

i was thinking about starting to do something along the lines of that now that i'll have a lot of free time during the summer.

Did you just use the wordpress off the site and did you program the java yourself? Also, who'd be the best (cheepest) web provider if i was to do this?

I made my site actually. Wasn't too hard, it uses a modified version of Wordpress that I adapted with some JavaScript optimization.

The theme I made last summer and have been tweaking it ever since.
