And nine times out of ten as we all know Big Sky lifts are practically ski-on. Given the lack of a ski town and weird vibe, you'd think people would not want to return over and over, but for a certain type of skier the perceived lack of crowds is their #1 priority. And these people are not tram types skiing steeps in the alpine. Just regular families and retired couples. I'd be willing to bet PE ruining ski towns etc. is stuff that never even comes across their radar.
Crowds and costs are why we stopped going to the "destination" resorts in the 90s. The first alternative were the smaller resorts like 49N, Silver Jackass, Turner, Disco, BB, MSB, Lost Trail. The second alternative was the Alps.

Both alternatives provided not only less cost and longer soft snow, but an exposure to the odd locals that have been driven from the destination resorts, the people that give unique color and character to a place.

A mutual acquaintance who works at the local airport says there are people flying in on jets coming into town and buying homes sight unseen and flying out two hours later. Homes listed at $5-600K 1-2 years ago have jumped to $9-100K.

It's hard to envision owning a private jet and wanting to buy a $900k house in Salida or BV.

I believe it, but it's still hard to envision.

Lucky for them, the bad attitude is free. Its a great town with a lot of unique things going for it. But, as is the theme, the assholes have moved in. I've got friends that have lived there for 20+years in and out of town. The vibe has changed rapidly.

When you live in a tourist town, you embrace the tourists and all that comes with it because they are usually attached to a wallet. The same can be said for second home owners.

But now the WFHers and that sure as shit looks like you don't work crowd has reached some critical mass where it is "their town". Salida is kinda sorta holding on but the money flex is real.

Its a bit like the Driggs of Colorado it seems. Lots of Realtors(tm), lots of large format tile and beam work. "Lets build a spec house in Salida because I like bikes, do you like bikes? How about SUP, yoga, dog walking by the river?"

The Vic is closed but hey, "Lets buy a condo in the Palace Building and AirBnB it! I'm sure we can get $1k a night when there is a festival. Walking distance to The Boat House...maybe $2K?"

Ha...basically the problem with Cool Places. Cool People.

    #Don't Up Valley Down Valley

#Remember when you could buy underwear in this town

#Make the mountains lame and backwards again

#Why do I feel like a guest in my home town?

Suck on the tit of the outside money. Find an uncomfortable peace with those that think that they are running the place. Always be ready to pull up the anchor. Remember that the world is full of relatively quite places with awesome people and fun shit to do.

Don't suffer in silence as we circle the drain.

Which asswipes? The retiree/veteran that is always in your way at Safeway, or the "patriots" who want to line 285 with flags, or the Eagle/Summit expats who forgot how to use a stop sign, or the rad dads/moms always in a rush to get to the coffee shop, or the armed dude who patrols F-street, or the "it's a lifestyle" crowd, or....
