    Best longform magazine articles

The V Files: The Shocking Legacy of an ’80s Sci-Fi Cult Classic

Hollywood backstabbing, conspiracy theories, and the devastating murder of a star behind the TV alien-invasion sensation.

Maybe not a true long form article but I didn’t know where else to put it

I read this article a few years ago, came across it again today. About fires and debris slides above LA. Article is from 1988. Great read.

I think this is part 2, but looks like you need to be a subscriber. https://archives.newyorker.com/newyo...3/flipbook/072

Assuming from the URL that’s John McPhee’s essay, you can find it (along with similar essays on Mississippi flooding, etc) in his book The Control of Nature. It’s worth a read.

    I read this last night:

That was a fun read. V definitely had an impact at the time; not sure I watched the whole series tho.

A neighborhood friend had a younger brother who looked like a mini-me Robert Englund. Uncanny resemblance. We called him "V" as a nickname.

Here’s one that’s really worth reading. Different subject than most but very good writing. Gifted past paywall.

Wow, that was glorious. Thanks for sharing!

My mom subscribes to TNY and periodically sends me a big stack of them, which I work through during sleepless nights or plane rides. This was a fun article:

Along those lines, they just ran this story about supercars and the market for them.

This doesn't fit this topic, but it's long and interesting. 50 years ago an expedition to Aconcagua ended in disaster for some of the members. A couple of years ago a camera owned by one of the expedition members melted out of the glacier and was found, with film still in it. The Times made a special section on it in today's paper and here's the interactive version: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/...smid=url-share

Has anyone read a recent issue of Mountain Gazette? A long time ago, I used to pick up a copy at the climbing gym, but it has been years since I have read on, but have been seeing recent advertisements for it and it sounds like it is making a come back.

That's a good one. I read it online a couple days ago when it came out. I meant to look at the physical version at my parents' house to see how it compared.

The paper version is how I found out about it when it came with out copy yesterday. It's well done and impressive but I think the online version is better, the photos are clearer and there's the ancillary videos too.

Someone handed me a copy yesterday. Didn't dive too heavily into too heavily as it was an x-mass gathering but it definately appeared to have some substance (ie. articles, art, something beyond the usual industry B.S.)

Yeah, John Branch is a writer that, when I see his byline, it’s a must read. Most here have probably read his piece snowfall, about the tunnel creek avalanche, but even better is his series on Derek Boogaard and the role of the NHL enforcer. It’s from around 2010 and I think was fleshed out into a book later. I’ll look and post a link if I can.

edited to add - had not finished the Aconcagua piece when I posted. Now I have. Very worth reading. I find the last sentence haunting:

”The details — the newspaper stories, the letters, the official documents, all the questions and regrets — were swallowed up by sadness, then by time.”

MG is back and is legit. Mike Rogge bought it and is giving it the love and attention it needs.
